Tarleton to open South Division schedule at home Saturday

STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texan men's basketball team will open the Lone Star Conference South Division portion of its schedule on Saturday, Jan. 16.  Tip-off against Angelo State is set for 7 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.

The Texans will look to return to their winning ways after claiming seven straight victories before dropping a 76-67 decision at Dallas Baptist on Monday in Tarleton's final non-conference game of the regular season.

Tarleton is 12-3 overall and 10-1 at home in 2009-10.  The purple and white have claimed nine of the 15 conference openers since joining the LSC.  Tarleton is 6-2 in division openers since the 2001-02 season.

Corin Henry leads the team with 12.1 points per game, 32 steals and 71 assists.  #Devon Hills# (11.7) and Jeremiah Wilson (11.1) are also averaging in double figures.   Wilson leads the squad with 9.3 rebounds per game while Donta Smith is second with 6.4 rebounds per contest.

Tarleton is averaging .426 from the floor, .364 from the three-point arc and .676 from the charity stripe while opponents are shooting .362 from the field, .318 from the arc and .646 from the free throw line.  The Texans are outrebounding opponents 38.9 to 33.6 and outscoring them 70.7 to 56.0.

The Rams are coming off an 84-76 victory at home against then-undefeated and No. 7 Midwestern State on Wednesday.  ASU is 9-6 this season and 2-4 on the road.

LaMarshall Corbett leads the team with 23.3 points per game while Stavon Williams (13.1) and Johnny Barnes (11.3) are also averaging in double figures.  Barnes leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game while Shavar Burch is second with 5.7 boards per outing.  Burch was the LSC South Division Preseason Player of the Week.

ASU is averaging .466 from the field, .360 from the arc and .700 from the line while opponents are shooting .422 from the floor, .351 from the arc and .711 from the stripe.  The Rams are outscoring foes 79.2 to 74.1 and outrebounding them 37.6 to 35.3.

The Angelo State/Tarleton series began in 1965, and the Texans trail in the all-time series, 33-22.  Tarleton lost the first meeting between the two teams in a four-overtime battle in San Angelo (1/1709), 85-80.  The Texans won the final game of the regular season 70-65 in Stephenville on Feb. 28, 2009.
