Men set to host Greyhounds Wednesday

STEPHENVILLE – Wisdom Gym will see two men's basketball teams battle to stay unblemished in the Lone Star Conference South Division when the Tarleton Texans host Eastern New Mexico at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The Texans enter the contest 13-3 overall and 1-0 in the South Division after downing Angelo State on Saturday, 78-62.  ENMU is 2-0 in the South Division, ending a 24-game division losing streak with a 78-65 win at home against Abilene Christian last Wednesday which the Greyhounds followed with a 72-62 victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.  ENMU is 7-9 overall.

Tarleton has now won seven of their last nine division openers with the win over the Rams, and the Texans are 5-1 in game two after winning the opener.

This season, Tarleton is led by Corin Henry with 11.9 points, 33 steals and 77 assists.  Jeremiah Wilson leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per contest and is second in scoring with 11.7 points per game.  Devon Hills is third in scoring with 11.6 points per outing while Donta Smith is second in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game.  Wilson also leads the team with 28 blocks.  Wale Ogunoye leads all players who average more then 20 minutes per game with a .507 shooting percentage.

The Texans are averaging .429 from the floor, .361 from the three-point arc and .685 from the charity stripe.  Tarleton is allowing opponents to shoot .358 from the field, .307 from the arc and .656 from the line.  The purple and white are outscoring foes 71.1 to 56.4 and outrebounding them 38.8 to 33.9. 

Tarleton leads the LSC in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense while ranking second in scoring margin and three-point field goal percentage. Wilson is tops in the league in rebounding per game and offensive rebounds (4.1) while Henry is second in assists per game (4.8).  Tarleton is third in the nation in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense.

The Greyhounds, who had lost five straight before the two South Division victories, are led by Tyler Jefferson with 12.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.  Victor Reid is second with 10.1 points per outing while Equs Darby is second in rebounding with 5.5 boards per night. 

ENMU is averaging .428 from the field, .266 from the arc and .683 from the line while opponents are shooting 437 from the floor, .328 from the arc and .696 from the stripe.  The Greyhounds are being outrebounded 36.6 to 34.3 and outscored 72.6 to 67.7.

Tarleton has claimed the last four meetings between the two teams and 22 of the last 23.  The only ENMU victory in that span was on Feb. 24, 2007 in overtime in Portales, N.M. (77-74).  Tarleton leads the all-time series, which began in 1964, 25-7.  Under Reisman, the Texans are 25-6 over ENMU and 14-2 in Wisdom Gym, including taking the last 13.

Wednesday is Black Out Night in Wisdom Gym where prizes will be given to the individuals dressed in the most black.  It is also Gilbert Intermediate Night where students will get in free with their ticket they received at school.
