STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texans will try host its last non-NCAA Division II opponent of the year on Monday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. when Paul Quinn comes to Wisdom Gym for Autograph Night.
The Texans are coming off a 65-33 win over Texas-Permian Basin that improved the purple and white's record to 10-2 on the season. Effran Bryant led the team with 17 points while Jeremiah Wilson recorded his fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Devon Hills added 10 points for the Texans in the win.
Tarleton is led this season by Corin Henry with 12.4 points per game this season while he also leads the squad with 24 steals and 57 assists. Wilson leads the squad with 9.4 points per game and is second on the team with 11.4 points per game. The Texan senior also has 22 blocks to top the squad. Also averaging in double figures is Hills with 10.8 points per outing.
The Texans are averaging .436 from the floor, .399 from the three-point arc and .653 from the charity stripe while opponents are hitting .363 from the field, .331 from the arc and .646 from the line. Tarleton is outrebounding foes 38.9 to 33.5 and outscoring them 70.7 to 56.5.
Paul Quinn enters the contest 2-5 after an 83-60 loss at Southwestern Oklahoma on Dec. 8. In their six NAIA games (which are the only stats available), the Tigers are averaging .451 from the field, .351 from the arc and .559 from the line while opponents are shooting .442 from the floor, .328 from the arc and .606 from the line. The Tigers are being outscored 73.2 to 68.0 per game.
Jason Burke-Kavros leads the team with 23.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Nigel Grisham is second in rebounding with 5.7 boards per contest, and he is second in scoring with 8.5 points per outing.
In the game against SWOSU, the Tigers were led by Mihail Dimtrov with 17 points, Marquest Watson with 14 and Lamar Nichols with 10. Nichols led the team with seven rebounds. PQC averaged .451 from the field, .583 from the arc and .778 from the line.
The Texans will host PQC for just the ninth game between the two squads. The overall series is tied at four games apiece, dating back to 1973. Tarleton has won the last two meetings between the two teams, including an 86-76 win on Dec. 29, 2008 and a 79-61 win on Feb. 1, 1993. The last PQC win was a 67-62 decision on March 5, 1990 when the school was located in Waco. Paul Quinn is now located in Dallas.
