TexAnn Tennis down MSU, fall to NSU in semifinals Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Tarleton TexAnn tennis team downed Midwestern State, 5-3, in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championships, but then later fell to Northeastern State, 5-4, in the semifinal round at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center in Oklahoma City on Friday.

Tarleton opened the day, winning just one of three doubles matches. Adrianna Jaskova and Carole Julen downed MSU's Lindsey Holcomb (6-2, 6-3) and the TexAnns headed into singles play down 1-2.

Tarleton regrouped in singles play, winning four of the next five matches. Mariana Freitas downed Kaja Banas in the second flight with a (6-4, 6-2) win, while Jade Charlot defeated Leah Roberts (6-2, 6-2) in the fourth flight. Julen followed with a (6-2, 6-3) win over Holcomb in the fifth flight and Evgeniya Prokofeva picked up a (6-0, 6-1) win over Holly Gunderson in the sixth flight to send the TexAnns into the semifinal match against NSU.

Charlot and Prokofeva teamed up to defeat Claire Chaney and Ivana Bejejova (8-0) in No. 2 doubles, but it would turn out to be the only doubles win and again the TexAnns headed into singles play down 1-2.

Freitas picked up a come-from-behind win, a (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) victory over Emina Spirtovic) in the semifinal round, as did Charlot who defeated Bejejova (4-6, 7-5, 6-2). Prokofeva won her match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3), but it would be the final singles win for Tarleton as the RiverHawks picked up wins in the first, third and fifth flights to take the match 5-4.

The TexAnns will now await a bid into the NCAA South Central Regional that begins Wednesday, May 6, and runs through Friday, May 8.
