TexAnns open season with two wins

COMMERCE – The Tarleton TexAnn volleyball team swept the first two contests of the 2010 season Friday with a 3-1 victory over both Southern Arkansas and Fort Hays State at the Texas A&M-Commerce Invitational in Commerce.

Tarleton (2-0) took the first two games against SAU (25-17 and 25-18) before dropping game three (21-25). The TexAnns then finished off the Muleriders with a 25-21 fourth-game victory.

Jessie Hartman had 25 assists to lead the team to a .272 hitting percentage as Rachel Wolf (12) and Flynn Harrell (11) each had double-digit kills. Harrell and Hartman each had 10 digs as well.

The TexAnns hit .519 in the first game of the first match of the season, but the team had just two blocks in the match.

SAU's Ashlie Arnold had 26 assists to lead the opponent while Rebecca Pate had 12 kills. The Muleriders had a .171 hitting percentage and six blocks.

In the second match of the day, the TexAnns lost game one (26-24) before sweeping the last three games of the match (25-19, 25-21 and 25-23).

Hartman had 26 assists with Danielle Barker adding 16 while Wolf had 27 kills. Harrell added 12 kills as the team hit .228 as a squad. Wolf had a .426 hitting percentage in the second match of the day.

Tarleton had six blocks in the contest.

No FHSU player had double-digit kills in the match as Whitney Liggett recorded 20 assists. The Lady Tigers had a .094 hitting percentage and three blocks in the loss.

The TexAnns will play Arkansas-Monticello at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4 before finishing the tournament with a match against Panhandle State at 5 p.m.
