Texans send Rams home with 70-53 loss

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton Texans remained undefeated in Lone Star Conference South Division action after controlling Angelo State on Saturday in Stephenville – downing the Rams, 70-53.

The Texans (11-3, 2-0) outscored the Rams 38-14 in the paint while holding Ridge McKeither to just four points and three rebounds after he scored 31 points and pulled down 16 boards in the ASU win over Midwestern State on Wednesday.

Wale Ogunoye might be the best defensive post player in the country,” said Tarleton Associate Head Coach Chris Reisman. “Fabian Wilson came in and did a great job as well, but Wale did a great job tonight.”

The Texans shot 58.3 percent from the floor while forcing 18 turnovers by the Rams which led to 19 Tarleton points.

“We wanted to keep coming after them all 40 minutes,” Reisman said. “I was impressed with the way we executed the game plan and translated the scouting for this game. It was a very good team effort tonight.”

Wale Ogunoye gave the Texans the first basket of the game before a three by Steven Moore made it 3-2 in favor of the visitors. After the two teams traded buckets, Tarleton trailed 8-6 with 16:16 after an Aseante Roberts' layup. The Texans then scored the next 11 points with buckets by Wes Dipprey, Corin Henry, Warren Webb and a three by Fabian Wilson.

ASU cut the lead to three (17-14) with a three and layup and free throw by Andre Adams at 11:43, but Webb had another jumper in the paint to end the Ram run. The Texans would stretch the lead to 12 (26-14) with 6:11 on the clock when Henry and Dipprey had layups followed by an old-fashioned three-point play by Carrington Tankson.

A free throw by Ladonn Huckaby was followed by a Wilson layup and two free throws by Donta Smith to put Tarleotn up 30-15 with 5:00 on the clock. ASU would then cut the lead to nine with 3:42 on the clock. Tankson and Richard Thomas traded threes before Moore had his second of the game to make it 33-27 with 2:06 left in the period.

At 1:15, Devon Hills had his first point of the game with a free throw before Henry had the last points of the half with a jumper to put Tarleton up 36-27 at the break.

Henry hit a three to start the second half before Tankson had a bankshot from the left wing. As all four Texans were at the free throw line and extended free throw line as they set up their next offensive possession, Henry hit a wide-open Dipprey for a layup to make it 43-27 with 18:21 on the clock. Huckaby and Thomas then had a three and a layup followed by a Moore jumper to cut the lead to 43-34 with 15:36.

Tankson ended the Tarleton scoring drought with a jumper at the top of the key to increase the lead to 12 (45-34) before Thomas had a dunk. Trey Mays and Henry traded buckets before Hills had a three in the corner. Thoomas did the same before Henry hit Dipprey on a layup. Henry found Dipprey again after an Adams jumper that put the Texans up 54-43 with 8:30 on the clock.

The two teams traded points as the Texans led by 14 three times until the next media timeout at 3:36 where the Texans led 63-52. After trading free throws, Dipprey had a layup and then two free throws to increase the lead to 15. A layup by Henry with 31 seconds left gave the game its final total as the Texans won, 70-53.

Dipprey led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds while Tankson had 17 and Henry had 13.

Tarleton was 28-of-48 from the floor while shooting 50 percent from the three-point arc (6-12) and 53.3 percent from the charity stripe (8-15).

The Texans outrebounded the Rams 28-20.

ASU was led by Thomas with 21 points and six rebounds as the Rams shot .429 from the field (18-42), .500 from the arc (9-18) and .667 from the line (8-12).

Tarleton will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at home when it hosts No. 9 Incarnate Word at 8 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
