Abilene Christian spoils Hartman's record-setting day

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE - On Aug. 29, 2008, Jessie Hartman, a redshirt freshman from Smithson Valley High School, recorded her first career assist against Western New Mexico.

On Oct. 15, 2011, Hartman became the first Tarleton TexAnn ever to record 3,000 assists.

No. 3,000 came off a kill from Stacie Murrah in the second set against Abilene Christian (13-10, 7-4) Saturday, but despite the career achievement, the TexAnns (13-11, 7-5) dropped their third straight match to fall to fourth place in the Lone Star Conference standings.

Abilene Christian rallied from a first set loss, to take the next three and end the TexAnns' longest home stand of the season with a 3-1 loss on Pink Out day at Wisdom Gym.

ACU opened the game with a brief 3-1 push before Tarleton struck for an 9-1 run behind three Flynn Harrell kills, two Murrah put downs, an ace by Danielle Barker, and three Wildcat errors.

The Wildcats cut the score to within four at 10-6, but couldn't get any closer as Tarleton poured it on and claimed the first set 25-14.

Six different TexAnns landed a kill in the first set, and Tarleton recorded a hit percentage of .387.

After that, it was all Abilene Christian.

Tarleton failed to record a hit percentage higher than .189 over the next two sets - including a mere .027 in the third set loss.

The TexAnns trailed 8-4 to open the second set and trailed by as many as six, but rallied within three at 13-16.

ACU would never relinquish any more as they went on to knot the match 1-1 with a 25-21 win.

Tarleton's poor hit percentage resulted in a 10-point deficit early in the third set.

The TexAnns ended the set on a 14-9 run, but couldn't rebound from the rough start and fell 25-20.

A strong start again plagued Tarleton in the final set as ACU jumped out to an early 15-7 lead.

Tarleton answered with a 15-8 run to bring the ACU lead to one at 23-22 but the Wildcats scored the final two points to claim the set and match.

Harrell led the TexAnns with 13 kills, despite just a .133 hit percentage while Katie Covell and Nikki McNorton also cracked double figure kills with 12 each on .233 and .435 hit percentages, respectively.

Hartman tallied 29 assists to lead the team and bring her career total to 3,020. Barker added 20 assists.

Emily Klein led Tarleton with 16 digs while Covell added 15.

Tarleton now sits behind ACU, West Texas A&M and Angelo State in the LSC standings and will hit the road for three games against Eastern New Mexico, WTAMU, and ACU beginning Oct. 20.
