Tarleton drops second straight

SAN ANTONIO – The struggles continue for the Tarleton TexAnns (0-2), who dropped their second game of the St. Mary's Classic in San Antonio Sunday afternoon.
 
The TexAnns fell to Fort Hays (2-0) 67-56 at Bill Greenhey Arena Sunday afternoon.
 
For the second straight game, Tarleton jumped out to a big early lead.
 
Shelby Adamson opened the game with a 3-pointer and was followed by another three from her sister, Peyton just 32 seconds later. Tarleton extended its lead to 10-0 after a layup by Shane Lowrance and a pair of free throws by Shelby.
 
Fort Hays responded over the next several minutes, but Tarleton was able to hold on to a nine-point lead at 20-11.
 
The Lady Tigers struck for a 12-2 run over the next 4:08 to take their first lead of the game, 23-22.
 
After a Peyton free throw tied the score at 23-23, FHSU began an 18-7 run over the rest of the first half to give Fort Hays an 11-point lead at the break.
 
Over the first half, Tarleton committed eight turnovers and only forced one steal while FHSU only turned the ball over four times in the first 20 minutes. The TexAnns were also just 7-25 shooting from the field.
 
Fort Hays' Katelyn Edwards opened the second half with a 3-point play, the old-fashioned way, to build the Fort Hays lead to 44-30.
 
Tarleton wasn't able to get much closer.
 
A 7-3 push by the TexAnns following the made free throw brought the score to 47-40, but Tarleton couldn't get any closer.
 
The TexAnns cut the deficit to seven two more times, and never trailed by more than 14.
 
Shelby led the TexAnns with 17 points on 4-10 shooting from the field and 8-9 shooting from the free throw line. Lisa Parker and Peyton were next with nine points each, while Cheyenne Berry added eight from the bench.
 
FHSU's Edwards recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds while three other Lady Tigers were in double figures.
 
Tarleton shot just 30 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point land. Fort Hays won the battle of the boards with 48 rebounds – 22 offensive – to Tarleton's 31 rebounds – nine offensive.
 
The TexAnns make their home debut Wednesday at 6 p.m. against St. Mary's.
