STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team dropped two games Tuesday to St. Mary's in Stephenville, losing 6-3 and 15-6.
Tarleton fell to 17-21-1 overall while St. Mary's improved to 31-15 on the season.
Arianna Rodriguez hit .571 on the day and was four-for seven with a double, a run batted in and three runs scored to lead the team at the plate. Rebecca Wessels walked four times and scored twice for Tarleton.
The TexAnns will return to action at Eastern New Mexico this weekend for a three-game, Lone Star Conference South Division series in Portales, N.M.
St. Mary's 6, Tarleton 3
St. Mary's struck first in game one by scoring three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning to take the early 2-0 lead, but Tarleton quickly jumped on top in the bottom of the frame.
Wessels drew a leadoff walk before Kesley Latta was hit by a pitch. Wessels stole third before Samantha Swanda singled to short to load the bases. Rodriguez singled to left to score Wessels. Amy Gabbert reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error by the catcher which scored Swanda. Latta was out at home on the play as she tried to score as well, but Rodriguez scored on a ground out by Katie Welborn to put Tarleton ahead, 3-2.
The Lady Rattlers then took the lead for good with a three-run second inning. St. Mary's scored three runs on two hits to make it 5-3 before adding a run in the top of the sixth when Lauren Miller doubled to center to score Chelsea Wenske who had walked with two outs in the half inning.
Tarleton had a runner on in each inning, but after the bottom of the first, the TexAnns failed to move the runners around to score.
Swanda got the loss to fall to 9-11 on the season after pitching 3.0 innings. She allowed five runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Randi Fentress pitched 4.0 innings and gave up one run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Emily Brittain got the win to improve to 19-7 on the year. She pitched 7.0 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.
St. Mary's 15, Tarleton 6
The Lady Rattlers wasted little time jumping out to a lead in game two, scoring 10 runs on seven hits and two errors. Only two of those runs were earned in the inning.
Wessels led off the bottom of the first with a walk and then stole second before Gabbert doubled to center and advanced to third on an errant throw. Wessels scored. With two outs, Welbron walked before Eryn Freitas pinch ran for the first baseman and then stole second on a passed ball. Gabbert was out at home trying to steal on the play. Tarleton trailed, 10-1.
St. Mary's then scored five more runs in the top of the second inning on three hits and two errors to take a 14-run advantage, 15-1.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Abigail Tammen singled to third before Brittany Dumas walked. Victoria Kelly then singled to second to load the bases. Wessels walked to score Tammen from third before a double play ended the inning with the TexAnns trailing, 15-2.
Swanda led off the bottom of the third with a home run to right field before Rodriguez singled to center. Welborn was hit by a pitch and Alexandria Orf singled to left to load the bases. With two outs, Kelly walked to score Rodriguez to cut the lead to 15-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, Gabbert led off with a walk before Rodriguez doubled to left with an out. Welborn then singled to left to score Gabbert. Rodriguez then scored when Orf grounded out to third to make it 15-6.
However, the TexAnns went down in order to lose in five innings.
Katie Smith recorded the loss to fall to 6-6. She pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 12 runs (only two earned) on eight hits with no walks and a strikeout. Swanda pitched 0.1 innings and allowed three unearned runs on two hits with a walk.
Maricella Bissaro (8-4) got the win for the visitors. She pitched 2.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Crystal Keller threw 3.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
