TexAnns drop two Saturday at Crossover

Box Score - Game 1
Box Score - Game 2

SAN ANGELO – The TexAnns lost two games on Saturday at the 2011 Lone Star Conference Crossover tournament, falling 5-2 to Central Oklahoma and 1-0 to Southwestern Oklahoma.

The defense again allowed runs that cost the TexAnns the game as Tarleton committed four errors in each game on Saturday.

Katie Smith pitched another great game, but bad defensive decisions and not pushing runs across the plate continues to cost us ballgames,” said Tarleton head coach Julie Mata. “We have a lot of heart. We are a new team together, and we will bounce back.”

The TexAnns will play their final game of the Crossover on Sunday, April 3 against Midwestern State at 2 p.m. at the Texas Bank Sports Complex in San Angelo.

Central Oklahoma 5, Tarleton 2

Neither team got on the board before the Bronchos scored in the bottom of the third. UCO put five runs on the board on four hits and two errors to take a 5-0 lead. The Bronchos left the bases loaded as Samantha Swanda came in to pitch and after the last run scored on an error, the TexAnn pitcher got a popup and a strikeout to end the UCO scoring.

On the first pitch of the next inning, Swanda slammed a pitch over the left field fence to cut into the lead. Katie Welborn walked before Eryn Freitas came in to pinch run for the catcher. She was moved over to second when Kelsey Latta walked, but when a grounder up the middle with one out forced the shortstop to run into Frietas as she was going to third, the pinch runner was called out for a runner interference. Amy Gabbert walked to load the bases, but slap hit to the pitcher by Victoria Kelly ended the inning with the TexAnns trailing, 5-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Rebecca Wessels got on via a leadoff single. She then stole second and went to third on a fielding error by the second baseman. A Swanda groundout to second added an RB to the TexAnns' leader in the category as Wessels scored to make it 5-2 UCO.

Amy Gabbert led off the top of the seventh with a single before a sacrifice bunt by Kelly moved the runner to second. A single by Wessels then put runners at the corners before a line drive to second and a popup to second ended the TexAnns threat, and Tarleton lost, 5-2.

Randi Fentress (2-3) took the loss for the TexAnns after starting the game and pitching the first 2.1 innings. She gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Swanda pitched the final 3.2 innings and gave up one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

Amanda McClelland pitched 6.1 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Rachel Steverson got her second save of the season by pitching the last 0.2 innings.

Southwestern Oklahoma 1, Tarleton 0

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs got a leadoff hit from Kristina Davis before she was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Davis then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to right by Jordan Knight and then scored on a bad relay throw to give SWOSU the early lead.

Tarleton then got back-to-back singles by Welborn and Latta to open the fifth frame, but two ground outs and a line out ended the TexAnns' threat.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, two errors allowed runners to second and third for SWOSU, but Katie Smith got two ground outs and a strikeout to end the Bulldogs' scoring threat.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Amy Gabbert pinch hit and got a single through the left side. Rachel Dieterich then forced a full count, but swung and missed to end the game as the TexAnns lost, 1-0.

Smith (7-3) took the loss after pitching 6.0 innings and giving up one unearned run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Katie Raines improved to 8-5 with the win after pitching the complete game and giving up four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
