TexAnns to play key series at ACU

ABILENE – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team needs to win two of its three Lone Star Conference South Division games this weekend at Abilene Christian to reach the program's 12th LSC Championship Tournament. The two teams will play one game at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 29 before playing a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 1 p.m.

The TexAnns are 21-23-1 overall and 9-9 in the LSC South. Tarleton is tied for fourth place in the division with ACU and Texas Woman's. TWU would have to sweep Angelo State this weekend to have a chance to get into the playoffs because both Tarleton and ACU own the tie-breaker over the Pioneers.

Tarleton is 21-21-1 in Division II action and is coming off a 6-4 win over then-No. 23 West Texas A&M last Saturday on a walk-off homerun by Katie Welborn.

Rebecca Wessels leads the team with a .362 batting average, 50 hits, 39 runs scored, three triples and 25-of-30 stolen bases. Samantha Swanda (.290) tops the squad with 12 homeruns and 38 runs batted in while Arianna Rodriguez (.288) leads the team with 11 doubles. The TexAnns are hitting .280 as a squad while opponents have a combined earned run average of 3.25.

Randi Fentress tops the team in the circle this season with a 2.76 ERA. She is 5-5 with 76.0 innings of action, 37 walks and 61 strikeouts. Swanda (10-12) has a 2.82 ERA in 146.1 innings of work. She has recorded 157 strikeouts and has 61 walks. Katie Smith (6-6) has a 2.89 ERA in 82.1 innings with 22 walks and 42 strikeouts. The team has a combined ERA of 2.82 while opponents are hitting .258.

The Wildcats are 26-26 overall and 9-9 in LSC South action. They are coming off a three-game sweep by then-No. 17 Angelo State last weekend.

Melissa Mendoza leads the team with a .419 batting average, 78 hits, 44 runs scored and 16 doubles. Valentina Nabayan (.348) tops the squad with nine homeruns and 30 RBI. The Wildcats are hitting .315 as a team while opponents have a combined ERA of 4.61.

ACU is led by Brittany Rexroat in the circle with a 3.71 ERA and a 12-9 record. She has pitched in 134.0 innings and allowed 46 walks with 52 strikeouts. Shelby Hall (8-11) has a 4.11 ERA in 135.1 innings of action. She has recorded 48 strikeouts and 42 walks. The team has a combined ERA of 4.33 while opponents are hitting .329.
