SAN ANGELO – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team knocked off the No. 3 Midwestern State Mustangs on Sunday at the 2011 Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament in San Angelo, 2-1.
Samantha Swanda pitched a great game and came up with the winning home run to push Tarleton to the win column. She was helped at the plate with a solo home run in the fifth by Katie Welborn.
“Our think our girls see themselves today the way I see them now,” said Tarleton head coach Julie Mata. “We played a full game – all out and confident. Samantha pitched great, and she and Katie came up with two clutch homeruns off two great pitchers. Our focus on what's next and carrying this energy on with us.”
With one out in the top of the opening frame, Megan Chartier singled before stealing second and third. Mallory Mooney walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch as Chartier scored to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Neither team had a runner get past second base until Welborn hit the home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth to leadoff the inning and tie the ballgame.
Swanda tagged her homerun ball over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth with one out.
She evened her record at 9-9 with the complete game victory. She allowed one run on four hits while walking two and striking out six.
Kristina Guiterrez started the game for MSU and pitched the first five innings allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Brittney Tanner took the loss to fall to 21-3 as she gave up the winning hit while striking out three.
