TexAnns drop two to UIW Friday

SAN ANTONIO – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team dropped two Lone Star Conference South Division games on Friday at Incarnate Word, 2-1 and 3-2.

The TexAnns fell to 17-18 overall and 5-6 in the South Division while the Cardinals improved to 22-18 overall and 7-4 in the division. 

The two teams will play the third game of the series on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. in San Antonio.

Incarnate Word 2, Tarleton 1

The TexAnns jumped out to an early lead when Abigail Tammen singled to left with one out in the top of the second inning. She then stole second before Rebecca Wessels reached on an error by the first baseman and Tammen scored on the error to make it 1-0 Tarleton.

Tarleton remained in the lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Melanie Padilla homered to center to tie the game. Kim Hanson then singled through the left side and advanced to second on a single by Kaylen Skinner. Randi Fentress came in to pitch for starter Samantha Swanda. Sarah O'Brien then reached on a fielder's choice that got the lead runner out at third. Chelsea Muskopf then singled to right to score pinch runner Mayra Perez to take the victory.

Swanda pitched 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts while Fentress had 0.1 innings with one hit.

Briana Sanchez pitched 7.0 innings and got the win for the home team. She allowed one unearned run on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Incarnate Word 3, Tarleton 2

Incarnate Word scored first in game two with a run on three hits in the bottom of the second.

Tarleton answered in the top of the seventh inning. Katie Welborn singled down the right field line to open the inning as Misti Lindamood pinch ran for the first baseman. Tammen moved the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt before Amy Gabbert pinch hit for Marcie Rodriguez. Lindamood stole third before Gabbert singled to left center to score the runner. Gabbert advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Alexandria Orf singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw as Gabbert scored. The score was tied at two.

In the bottom of the sixth frame with one out, Monica Acuna singled to left before Padilla homered to center field to put the home team ahead, 3-2.

Tarleton got a runner on with two outs in the top of the seventh, but the TexAnns couldn't get her around to horn and fell, 3-2.

Katie Smith pitched six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Whitney Waltrip claimed the victory after pitching six innings and allowing two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Briana Sanchez got the save pitching the last inning and striking out two TexAnns.
