STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton men's basketball tied for the Lone Star Conference lead Saturday and will now face Angelo State, who is at the bottom of the conference standings. The Texans are 5-0 in LSC play while the Rams are 6-9 on the year and winless in league action. ASU does lead the all-time series however with a 34-25 advantage.
GAMETIME
Tip-off is at 8 p.m. for the men's game and 6 p.m. for the women's game in Wisdom Gym.
LAST WEEK
The Texans (13-1) escaped with narrow three-point victories over Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. Tarleton defeated the Greyhounds 55-52 on Wednesday then defeated the Buffaloes 59-56.
Chris Harrell averaged 19.5 points over the two-game span and scored a game-high 21 points against ENMU.
Wes Dipprey anchored the nation's No. 1 defense with six steals against WTAMU.
THIS YEAR
On the season, Tarleton is shooting 48.6 percent from the floor, 32.5 percent from three-point land and 70.3 percent from the charity stripe. The Texans are averaging 70.4 points per game and 35.8 rebounds per game.
HOLDING OFF OPPONENTS
Opponent's are shooting just 34.9 percent overall and averaging 51.6 points per game against the Texans. Tarleton is No. 1 in the nation in points allowed and field goal percentage allowed.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Chris Harrell continues to lead the Texans in scoring with 13.4 points per game.
Fabian Wilson, Zach Nelson and Shedrick Haynes are all averaging double-digit points as well. Haynes has been the main distributor with 3.9 assists each contest. Wilson leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game.
SIZING UP THE OPPONENT
The Rams have struggled with a young team this season. ASU is 6-9 on the year and 0-6 in LSC play. They are also winless on the road in six attempts. The Rams won six of their first eight games, but have lost seven straight since then.
STOPPING THE RAMS
Overall, the Rams are averaging 66.1 points per game and giving up just 69.6 points to opponents. As a team, ASU is shooting 40.3 percent from the floor and 32.5 percent from three-point range. They rank towards the bottom of the conference in most of the major statistical categories, including last in scoring offense and second to last in scoring margin (-3.5).
WHO TO LOOK FOR
ASU is led offensively by junior transfer Kennen Coleman and his 16.3 points and 2.6 assists per game. Javae King-Gilchrist is adding 12.2 points per game and Hanif Nixon-Hughes is adding 12.1 points each contest.
Coleman is No. 3 in the LSC in scoring, while Nixon-Hughes is No. 7 in rebounding. Reggie Brice is No. 8 in rebounding and No. 2 in blocked shots (1.1).
AMONG THE BEST
The Texans are ranked near the top of almost every statistical category in the conference.
Tarleton is No. 1 in scoring defense (51.6 ppg) and No. 1 in scoring margin (+18.7). The Texans are also No. 1 in field goal defense (.349), No. 2 in rebounding defense (30.1) and No. 3 in rebounding margin (+5.6).
Individually,
Chris Harrell is No. 11 in scoring (13.4 ppg), while
Fabian Wilson is No. 3 in rebounding (6.6) and No. 3 in blocks (1.0). Zach Nelson is fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (.592). Shedrick Haynes is No. 4 in assist-to-turnover ratio as well (1.2) and No. 3 in assists (3.6).
NO. 1 DEFENSE
Tarleton finished the 2010-11 season as the No. 1 defense in the nation. That was not only at the Division II level, but also in Division I, III and Junior College ranks. This year's team has big shoes to fill, but has held opponents in check thus far as opposing offenses have averaged just 51.6 points per game. That is good enough for No. 1 in the nation again at the DII level.
REMAINING IN THE RANKINGS
Tarleton was ranked No. 8 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Polls and No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference Preseason poll.
The Texans are now No. 6 in the nation and tied for No. 1 in the LSC standings.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Texans host Angelo State on Wednesday before heading back out on the road to take on Abilene Christian on Saturday.
