QUICK HITS
  • The Texans are 29-22 all-time in homecoming games since 1961. Tarleton defeated Incarnate Word, 48-10, last season and are 3-2 in its previous five homecoming contests.
  • The purple and white is lost 13-10 on homecoming to the Javelinas back on Oct. 23, 2010. The game in 2010 was the first time the teams met during Tarleton's homecoming event.
  • The Javelinas received votes in the AFCA's preseason poll and then reached as high as No. 14 in the NCAA Division II poll following a 16-13 win over then No. 9-ranked Abilene Christian. TAMUK then dropped out of the top-25 poll on Oct. 17 after falling 40-10 to West Texas A&M and the Javelinas have not returned to the AFCA rankings.
  • Tarleton's Zach Henshaw (RB, Fr, Fischer) had career-highs in rushing yards (119) and touchdowns (3) against A&M-Commerce last Saturday. It was the true-freshman's second 100-yard outburst this season after rushing for 113 yards earlier this season against Eastern New Mexico.
  • Aaron Doyle has passed for 1,467 yards this season and is on pace to finish the 2012 campaign with 2, 445 yards, which would rank ninth all-time in single-season passing yardage.
  • Isaac Arellano (P, So, Euless) is currently averaging 43.0 yards per punt this season. The all-time school record for punt average is 42.0 (Todd Sells, 1998).

THE SERIES
The Texans trail 6-19 in the all-time series against the Javelinas, but have won two of the previous three contests, which includes a 57-56 double-overtime win over TAMUK in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II playoffs.

Tarleton took last season's game, 41-34, over the Javelinas in Kingsville. The Texans are just 2-9 when playing the Javelinas in Stephenville, with its last win at Memorial Stadium coming back on Oct. 6, 2007 (31-21).

HEAD COACH CARY FOWLER
Tarleton head coach Cary Fowler is in his third year at the helm of the Texan Football program. Fowler took over the team in January 2010 after then-head coach Sam McElroy departed to Texas Tech for an assistant coaching position.

Fowler went just 3-8 with the Texans in his first campaign as head coach in 2010. But the team and his coaching staff bounced back in 2011 with a 6-5 mark, which included going 5-3 in Lone Star Conference play and winning its final five games of the regular-season.

Fowler heads into this weekend's game with an overall record of 12-16 and a 1-1 mark against the Javelinas.

TAMUK HEAD COACH BO ATTERBERRY
Texas A&M-Kingsville head coach Bo Atterberry is in his sixth season with the Javelinas. Atterberry was named TAMUK's eighth head coach on June 1, 2007. He joined the Javelina staff in January of 2007 as defensive coordinator after serving at the same position at Southeastern Oklahoma the previous three seasons, but he was then elevated to head coach after an unexpected coaching change that summer.

Atterberry, who was named the South Central Region Coach of the Year following the 2010 season, heads into Saturday's contest with a 38-26 record in six seasons at the helm of the Javelina football program. Atterberry guided the Javelinas to a 10-2 record mark in 2010, giving TAMUK its first 10-win season since 1989.

After going just 3-8 in his first season, Atterberry has led the Javelinas to four-straight winning seasons. Under Atterberry's guidance, TAMUK has one Lone Star Conference Championship (2009) and made two appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs (2009, 2010).

LAST WEEK
Tarleton jumped out to an early 10-0 lead against A&M-Commerce, but the Lions came roaring back to tie the game 10-10 following a pick-six and a field goal. BARNES KICKS HIS WAY INTO RECORD BOOKS
Blake Barnes (K, Fr, Stephenville) kicked five field goals in Tarleton's 46-10 win over A&M-Commerce this past weekend, tying a school record for most single-game field goals in the process. Barnes tied the mark, which was first set by Trampus Wilson back on Sept. 4, 1993 against East Central. J.W. Boren made five field goals as well back on Oct. 21, 2000 against Abilene Christian.

Barnes' game-tying field goal on Saturday came from 38-yards out and it followed a one hour and 50 minute lightning delay.

HONORED BY THE LSC

Barnes becomes the third Texan to earn POW honors this season as both Jerome Regal (Offensive POW) and Marquis Wadley (Defensive POW) both earned the weekly honor following Tarleton's 20-17 win over Midwestern State in the first game of the season.

WELCOME BACK FORMER TEXANS AND TEXANNS
The Tarleton Athletics department welcomes back all former letterwinners to the 2012 Tarleton Homecoming game. This year, the 1977 football team will be recognized as more than 15 players from that squad will be back in town to celebrate another homecoming.

The 1977 team was the first Texan football team to bring home a conference championship as a TIAA member. The team went 7-3 overall and 4-0 in TIAA play under head coach Buddy Fornes.
Members from that group went on to finish the 1978 campaign with an 8-1-1 mark and another undefeated TIAA championship season at 7-0-1.

Former Texan Cheerleaders will be attending the game on Saturday as well, with more than 10 former cheer members on hand to help out the current Texan Cheer squad.
