LSC opener on-tap for Texans this Wednesday

SAN ANGELO - The Tarleton Texans (4-1, 0-0 LSC) open the Lone Star Conference portion of the schedule this Wednesday, Dec. 5, as the team travels to face the Angelo State Rams (2-4, 0-2 LSC). Tip-off between the two teams is set for 7:30 p.m. at Stephens Arena in San Angelo.
 
QUICK HITS
• The Texans head into Wednesday's contest against ASU with a four-game winning streak.
• Tarleton is coming off a 77-61 win over Arlington Baptist this past Saturday in Stephenville.
• The Rams are have dropped four-consecutive games after beginning the season at 2-0.
• ASU is coming off a 73-44 loss to then No. 18-ranked West Texas A&M at home on Saturday.
 
SERIES HISTORY
• The Rams lead the all-time series 34-27, which dates back to 1965.
• Tarleton has won the previous four match-ups between the two teams and have not lost to the Rams since falling 90-81 back on Feb. 27, 2010, in San Angelo.
• The Texans won both games last season, downing the Rams 76-55 at Wisdom Gym and then 67-61 at Stephens Arena.
• Head coach Lonn Reisman is 25-10 against the Rams all-time.
 
OPENING UP THE LSC SCHEDULE
• The Texans are 12-6 in LSC openers since joining the league in 1994.
• Tarleton is 2-1 all-time when opening up LSC play against Angelo State.
• The Texans have won three-straight LSC openers dating back to the 2009-10 season. Tarleton's last loss in a season opener came to Texas A&M-Kingsville back on Jan. 14, 2009 (L, 51-45).
 
DID YOU KNOW?
• Angelo State was Tarleton's first-ever Lone Star Conference opponent when the Texans made the jump to NCAA Division II and joined the LSC.
• The Rams won the contest 58-51 in Stephenville.
• The last time a Tarleton team played in four overtimes was against ASU back on Jan. 17, 2009, in San Angelo. The Rams managed to defeat the Texans 85-50.
 
SCOUTING THE RAMS
• Head coach Fred Rike, a West Texas A&M alum, is in his seventh year at the helm of the ASU men's basketball program.
• Rike brings in an overall record of 87-84 into Wednesday's contest and is 3-9 all-time when his team plays the Texans.
• ASU won its first two games of the season, but are in a current four-game slump after falling to West Texas A&M by 29 points this past Saturday.
• The Rams are scoring a clip of 70.2 points per game and are allowing opposing teams to score 72.8 points.
• ASU is shooting just .383 from the field as a team and are allowing opponents to shoot .500 from the floor. The Rams rank last in the conference in both categories.
• Despite its troubles from the floor, the Rams are shooting a conference-best 71.1 percent from the free throw line.
• Chris Talkington leads all Ram players with a 16.6 points per game average. He is followed by Jovan Austin (12.5 ppg) and Antonio Dye (12.4).
• Talkington leads his squad with 7.0 rebounds per game, while Ryan Marsh is tops with nine blocks so far this season.
 
CARTER'S STREAK ENDS
Davene Carter's consecutive field goals streak came to an end in Tarleton's 77-61 victory over Alrington Baptist on Saturday.
• Carter headed into the contest having made his previous 16 field goal attempts.
• The sophomore made his first four field goals in Saturday's game, pushing the streak to 20-straight field goals just before missing a put-back at the 5:22 mark of the second half.
• Carter heads into Wednesday's game having missed just four field goals (26-for-30) on the young season.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
• The Tarleton Texans are 321-57 (.849) overall when playing inside the friendly confines of Wisdom Gym under head coach Lonn Reisman.
• The Texans have posted a record of 195-24 (.890) at home under Reisman since the year 2000.
• Tarleton is 248-43 (.852) all-time at home under Reisman since joining NCAA Division II.
 
FINAL TUNE-UP
• Saturday's game against Arlington Baptist was Tarleton's final tune-up before opening up the LSC schedule this week.
• The Texans are now 10-4 in contests played the first LSC contest, since the year 2000.
 
COLEMAN NOTCHES PAIR OF CAREER-HIGHS
• Junior guard Coleman Furst scored a career-high 23 points in Saturday's win over the Patriots.
• Coleman's previous career-high had been 15 points, which he scored in the team's first two games this season.
• The Denison native pulled down five rebounds on Saturday as well, which also marked a career high for the third-year player.
• Coleman set a career-high with three steals earlier this season.
 
DOUBLE DOWN
• Sophomore forward Davene Carter scored 11 points and recorded a career-high 13 rebounds on Saturday to notch his first-ever double-double.
• The accomplishment for the young Texan is the first recorded double-double for a Tarleton player this season.
 
UPCHURCH KEEPS SCORING
De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) scored 13 points in Tarleton's win over Arlington Baptist on Saturday.
• The junior transfer has now scored double-digits in four of his first five games that he has suited up for the Texans.
• He and Furst are the only two Texans to score in double-digits in at least four games this season. Furst has scored in double figures all five games for Tarleton.
 
TEXANS PICKED TO WIN LSC
• The Texans were selected to defend its LSC Championship, earning the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll released by the league office on Oct. 25, 2012.
• Tarleton received 12 of a possible 29 first-place votes in the poll.
• Midwestern State received 12 first-place votes in the poll as well, but Tarleton took the top spot earning 269 total points to MSU's 262.
 
TEXANS DEBUT 2012-13 SEASON AT NO. 17 IN NABC PRESEASON POLL
• The Texans finished the 2011-12 campaign at No. 9 in the nation and head into the new season at No. 17 according to a preseason poll released by the NABC on Nov. 2.
• Tarleton was the highest ranked LSC team in the preseason poll. MSU debuts at No. 23 in 2012-13 after finishing No. 5 last season.
• Including the 2012-13 campaign, Tarleton has been preseason ranked inside the top-25 seven times.
 
TARLETON IN SEASON-OPENERS
• Tarleton snapped a 10-game winning streak in season openers after falling 73-60 to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the 2012-13 opening game. Tarleton fell to 21-4 in season-openers under coach Reisman.
• Tarleton's last loss in a season-opener had come back in 2001 against Wingate (73-83).
 
REISMAN AMONG WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES IN NATION
Lonn Reisman entered the 2012-13 season with a .702 winning percentage, which ranks 12th overall among active coaches in NCAA Division II.
• Reisman's .702 winning percentage ranks 26th overall among active coaches in both NCAA Division I and II.
 
TEXANS RANKED NO. 1 IN DEFENSE LAST SEASON
• The Texans finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in scoring defense for a second-straight year after allowing opponents to just 56.3 points per game in 2012-13. The Texans allowed just 53.3 points to finish no. 1 in 2010-11.
 
UP NEXT
• Tarleton returns home this Saturday, Dec. 8 to host Abilene Christian (4-2, 1-1 LSC) in Lone Star Conference Action.
• Saturday's contest will be the last time the Texans and Wildcats play inside Wisdom Gym as NCAA Division II members as ACU heads to the Southland Conference next season.
• Tip-off between the Texans and Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. inside Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
• The Texans will then have a 10-day lay-off for final exams and will not return to the court until Tuesday, Dec. 18, in a non-conference home contest against Henderson State.
