CANYON – Tarleton dropped its second conference game of the season Saturday with a 58-52 loss to West Texas A&M, but due to outside circumstances, still managed to claim at least a share of the Lone Star Conference Championship.
The TexAnns claimed the share of the championship with a 54-59 loss by Midwestern State to Texas Woman's in Denton Saturday afternoon.
The first half was an offensive struggle for Tarleton, who managed just a pair of free throws over the first 3:30 while the Lady Buffs built an early 8-2 lead.
After WT extended its lead to nine at 14-5,
Shelby Adamson and
Shanae Lowrance hit back-to-back field goals to cut the deficit to 14-9.
Tarleton cut into the deficit by bringing to score to 16-13, but a 4-0 push by WT put the Lady Buffs on top by seven. WT never led by more than seven the rest of the half while Tarleton brought the score to within five on several occasions, including just before halftime with a pair of
Kiara Wright free throws.
In the first half, Tarleton was 9-7 from the floor and 0-6 from 3-point land while WT was 11-24 from the field and 1-2 from deep.
Over the first seven minutes the WT lead remained between five and eight, but with just over 13 to play in the game
Morgan Stehling buried a baseline jumper to start a 10-2 TexAnn run with knotted the game at 39-39.
WT answered with six unanswered to push its lead back to 45-39. They later extended the lead to 48-41.
In a seven-point game,
Peyton Adamson drained a pair of free throws to make it 48-43 and Lowrance hit a 3-point play to bring Tarleton within two with less than four to play.
On the ensuing possession, the TexAnns took a hit when Wright fouled out of the game. West Texas was in the double bonus before the TexAnns were even in the one-and-one's.
In the two minutes following the Wright foul out, the TexAnns struggled by being out-rebounded 5-1, missing three field goals and committing two free throws which allowed WT to extend their lead to 52-46.
With 1:38 on the clock,
Shanae Lowrance went to the charity stripe where she hit 1-2. Off the second shot,
Karli Moore grabbed the rebound and scored a 3-point play to bring the TexAnns deficit to 52-50 with 1:12 left.
The Lady Buffs hit a 3-point play on the other end with the shot clock winding down to put the WT lead back to 55-50.
In the final seconds, WT went just 3-6 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
Tarleton shot just 33-percent from the floor for the game while WT hit 43-percent. The TexAnns were also 0-11 from beyond the arc.
Shelby Adamson led the TexAnns with 15 points and moved into fourth place all-time in Tarleton's scoring list, passing Dianna May with 1,494 points for her career.
Lowrance added 14 points while Peyton was the next highest scorer with six.
The TexAnns also committed 17 turnovers which led to 24 WTAMU points.
Tarleton will stay on the road for their final regular season road game of the year against Angelo Wednesday at 6 p.m.
