ARKADELPHIA, AR. - The No. 22 Tarleton TexAnn women's tennis team opened the Ouachita Baptist Quad Thursday afternoon and came away with eight wins and one loss against the host team.
The matches got started with doubles action and the TexAnn tandem of Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell dominated.
Perez and Mitchell swept the match 8-0, while Karla Martinez and Melanie Barnes also won their match but by a slim 8-5 margin.
Silvia Nieva and Kayla Deatherage dropped their match 8-6.
"We had very solid play from the No. 2 doubles spot (Perez/Mitchell)," said head coach Lance Drake. "We just weren't very focused with the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, but our No. 1 girls were able to pull it out."
When singles play started, the top three players for Tarleton had little trouble disposing of OBU.
Perez, Barnes and Martinez all swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
The other TexAnns also managed to sweep the field as Mitchell won 7-6, 6-3, Nieve won 6-2, 6-2 and Deatherage won 6-2, 6-1.
"We played much better in singles," said Drake. "Mackenzie had some trouble getting in rhythm today, but she hung in there and got the win. We some trouble with focus today, but we got a good effort from everyone."
Tarleton returns to action today against Northeastern State and Arkansas Tech.
