Tarleton baseball prepares for 2012 season

The Texans are coming off their most successful season in school history as they finished the year with a 35-15 record, 23-10 Lone Star Conference record, and a .700 overall winning percentage.  Tarleton also made trips to the LSC tournament and NCAA DII tournament in San Antonio.  This year, the Texans almost an entirely new team as they replace 16 seniors.  The combination of five returners, five seniors and loads of underclassmen should make for an interesting season at Tarleton.  One thing is for sure though, head coach Bryan Conger will have the Texan baseball program competing day in and day out as they look to make another trip to both the LSC Championships and the NCAA tournament.  Here is a breakdown of the team.

STARTING ROTATION
Matt Buckmaster- LHP- JR:  Matt is a very consistent strike thrower who does an excellent job of competing and mixing pitches at all times.  He is an extremely intelligent young man and will be a major factor in the Texans' success this season.

Joeseph Aquino-RHP-JR:  Joey has the ability to be one of the top starters in the conference based on pure ability.  He is another good strike-thrower with the ability to mix pitches and like Buckmaster, he can come at you and attack from multiple scenarios.

Pete Perez-RHP-JR:  Pete is very similar to Joey from the stand point of being an upper 80's to low 90's guy.  He has an above-average change up and has the ability to have an excellent curve ball as well.

Kenneth Stockton –SR.-RHP:  Kenny is extremely valuable because he has been in our system for 3 years now and is a tremendous team first guy.  He has the ability to be a 4th starter as well as contribute out of the pen.  We are fortunate to have a young man like Kenny in our program.

Tanner Ross-JR-RHP:  Tanner has some very good stuff.  He has done a great job of becoming a more consistent strike thrower.  Tanner has developed a really good change up to compliment his fastball/curveball combo.  Tanner is a great young man and has earned the right to contribute this year.

Colt Molloy-JR-LHP:  Colt worked his way into the rotation two years ago and has the ability to do so again.  Colt is a very competitive LHP who has a plus change up to compliment his fastball. He has worked hard on the consistency of his curve ball and it has turned into a potential out pitch at thjs level. Colt is in the same mold as Kenny and Tanner.  They are absolute team oriented guys and know exactly what's expected at all times.

Kyle Supak-JR-RHP:   Kyle had a good fall and has the ability to contribute in multiple roles this season.  Kyle has a solid fastball/curveball combo and his change-up has come a long way since the beginning of the fall.  Kyle will contribute more and more as he gains experience and comfort in Tarleton's system.

“We feel really good about our starting rotation this season,” said Conger. “We believe this group will allow us to mix a little more than we have been able to in the past and they all do a good job of pounding the strike zone consistently.”

BULLPEN
Tucker Mullens-JR-LHP:  Tucker has really matured after being in the program for a year.  The Texans are looking at Tucker as a left-handed specialist.  He was very tough on lefties all fall and has continued that into the spring.  He throws from multiple arm angles and it provides a tough adjustment for the hitter.

Joseph Rubalcaba-JR-LHP:  Joseph spent the fall recovering from off season back surgery and has come back very strong.  Joe has the ability to throw strikes and compete and will only get better as he continues to get stronger.

Noah Ringenberger-JR-LHP:  Noah has shown the ability to contribute out of the bullpen and like he does at everything, he just competes and gets after it.

Austin Coble-JR-RHP-   Austin will also see some time in the INF and provide a solid left-handed stick as well.  On the mound Austin is a solid middle relief type who throws an aggressive fastball along with a solid breaking ball.  Austin can throw from multiple arm angles and provides a solid “different look” out of the pen.

Taylor Christian-JR-RHP-   Taylor has one of the best arms in Division II baseball.  He will run it up there from 93-96 and maybe even a little more at times.  Taylor has tons of potential and could be a tremendous key to Tarleton's success this spring.

Landon Thompson-FR-RHP-   Landon has a very good arm and is only going to get better as his career progresses.  He will start at 3B this season and see innings late in the game.  Landon is 90-92 mph with a good breaking ball and a developing split finger. Landon's future is very bright.

“This is another area we feel confident in going into the season,” said Conger.  “We have a little more flexibility than we have in the past and believe we can go to certain match ups to really benefit the team.”

CLOSER
Britt Robertshaw-JR-RHP-   With the loss of Kody Thiebaud, Tarleton will turn to Britt Robertshaw.  He has Division I experience closing games and the Texans anticipate he will do well for them in that role.  Britt is another good power arm and will run the ball up there in the 92-95 mph range with a good tight slider.

INFIELD
1B:  Garrett Hardey-Sr.-  Garrett has really come on this fall and has turned himself into a very good player.  He will hit in the middle of the line up and provide Tarleton with an aggressive mentality there.

2B: Ethan Stuckly-Sr.-  Ethan will see playing time at multiple spots this year including third and first.  The majority of his time will be spent at second .  Ethan has the ability to have a great senior year for the Texans and should be one of the better hitters in the conference.

SS: Evan Robinson-Fr.-  Evan stepped in as a freshman this fall and really turned heads.  He is the epitome of how Tarleton wants to play.  He does anything he is asked and gives the team everything he has on a daily basis.  Evan has the best combo of quick feet and hands the Texans have had at shortstop since Conger has been there.

3B: Landon Thompson-FR.-  Landon is going to be a very good third who will eventually hit in the middle of the line up.  He has above average pop at the plate and has really improved his hands and footwork defensively.

Others who will see time in the infield this year are Ryan Small, Blake Silguero and Austin Coble.

“We lead the LSC in team defense last season and even though this is an entirely new infield we expect these young men to step in and continue that mindset,” said Conger.

OUTFIELD

CF-Andrew Wolfe-SR.- Andrew has done a great job of transitioning into an everyday centerfielder.  He has above average range and will bring a good aggressive mentality to the team. Wolfe is a strong leader by example.

The rest of the crew will be interchangeable on the corners.

Blake Silguero-Sr.-  Blake is a big strong young man who can run very well and will hit in the middle of the line up.  Blake will also see time as a DH.

Noah Ringenberger-Jr.-  Noah can literally play all three outfield spots and will probably end up doing so this spring.  Noah will hit in the top of the line up and the Texans expect him to have a tremendous year.

Chris Patton-So.-  Chris is a tremendous young man who is another one that will do anything for the team.  He does a great job of bringing energy every day and will contribute at all three spots this year.  Chris continues to improve everyday.

Ty Crump-JR-  Ty joined Tarleton at semester and has really impressed the coaching staff with his ability to run and play defense.  He might be the Texans' fastest guy and will certainly see action in multiple roles this year.

“This will be the fastest outfield we have had as a group since we have been here,” said Conger.  “As a group they can really go get the ball.”

CATCHER

Ryan Small-JR-  Ryan is a young man who will catch and also see time in the infield.  Ryan can run and has done a tremendous job of coming in and showing strong leadership qualities.  He plays the game hard and is in the mold of what the coaches think this team will become; guys who can run and play hard on a daily basis.

Jared Musgrove-So.- Jared is in his third year in the program and is starting to show signs of becoming the player he is capable of being.  Jared receives the ball well and has shown signs of being a contributor at the plate.

Jonathan Schmitz-Fr.-  John is a big strong young man who has a very bright future.  He will see time behind the plate this year and the Texans expect that he will turn himself into a very solid contributor as a freshman.

“We have three young men who will all get time back there this spring and we feel solid with any of them,” said Conger.

DESIGNATED HITTER

This role will change quite a bit this year but will mainly rotate between the following: Stuckly, Silguero, Hardey, Thompson

Others who may see action in this role are Jared Musgrove, Jonathan Schmitz and Andy Jacobi.

ROLE PLAYERS

Andy Jacobi-FR-UTL- Andy is the ultimate team guy.  He will play wherever you put him and is always looking at ways to help the team.  The really nice part about Andy's game is he has a very soid left-handed swing and the coaches believe he is going to end up hitting well for Tarleton.

The Texans will begin the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host McMurry at the Cecial Ballow Baseball Complex.
