Texans sweep Greyhounds in doubleheader, take 3-0 series lead

PORTALES, N.M. – The Tarleton baseball team defeated Eastern New Mexico twice on Saturday with a 8-3 decision in game one and a 15-3 beat down in game two.

The Texans improved to 10-6 on the season and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

Game 1 – Tarleton 9, Eastern New Mexico

The Texans struck early in the first game of the day by scoring four runs in the opening inning.  Jonathan Schmitz laced an RBI single to left field, followed by an RBI single by Ryan Small up the middle.  Up 2-0, Garrett Hardey doubled the margin with a two-run double down the left field line, plating Small and Schmitz.

Tarleton added to their lead with a single run in the second.  Blake Silguero was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it a 5-0 contest.  The Texans recorded four walks in the inning and ran ENMU starting pitcher Ryan Boydstun from the game.

In the fifth inning, Tarleton put the game out of reach with three more runs.  Andy Wolfe recorded an RBI single to open the scoring.  Evan Robinson then reached on a sacrifice bunt that plated Small.  Wolfe then capped off the inning by scoring on an error.

The Texans went on to score another run in the sixth while the Greyhounds put three runs on the board.  It would not be enough though as Tarleton took the first game of the doubleheader 9-3.

Pete Perez (3-1) pitched all seven innings for the Texans and gave up just three runs on eight hits.

Hardey led the offense with three RBI's, while Wolfe, Schmitz and Small recorded at least one RBI and mutli-hit games.

The Greyhounds' Boydstun was touched up for five runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Game 2 – Tarleton 15, Eastern New Mexico 3

For the second game in the past three attempts, the Texans put up 15-plus runs on 15-plus hits as they finished off the double header with a 15-3 victory.

Tarleton scored in each inning except the third and seventh innings, while putting up three or more runs in four separate at-bats.

Ethan Stuckly put the Texans on top in the first with an RBI triple.

Andy Wolfe stroked and RBI single and Evan Robinson added a two-run double in the second inning.

With a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth, Tarleton exploded for 11 runs over the next three innings. 

In the end, the Texans thumped the Greyhounds again, 15-3.

This time it was Matt Buckmaster's (3-1) turn to go all seven inning on the mound, giving up just one earned run on six hits and striking out six.

Daniel Sterling (1-3) was saddled with the loss for ENMU after his 4 2/3 innings of work.

Garrett Hardey not only led the offense with a 4-for-5 outing, four runs and four RBI's, but the senior first baseman also recorded 10 putouts.  Hardey and Landon Thompson also homered for the Texans.

Wolfe contributed three RBI's while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate.  Robinson drove in three more runs. 

The Texans (10-6, 3-0) will wrap up the series in Portales, N.M. on Sunday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. Stephenville time.
