STEPHENVILLE - The Texans head into the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference tournament in Allen where they will face the Buffaloes of West Texas A&M for the third time this season. A trip to the LSC Championship is on the line after Tarleton and WT split their regular season series. Both teams won on their home court. Friday's game will tip-off at 6 p.m. in the Allen Event Center.
LAST WEEK
The Texans (25-4, 15-3) used a big second half to overcome Texas A&M-Kingsville in the quarterfinals of the LSC Tournament. Tarleton picked up a 67-55 victory over the Javelinas thanks to a combination of
Fabian Wilson and
Wes Dipprey's post play.
Chris Harrell and
Brian Word provided the scoring from the outside as all four players scored in double figures for the Texans. Wilson recorded his sixth double-double of the season with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance.
THIS YEAR
On the season, Tarleton is shooting 47.4 percent from the floor, 32.5 percent from three-point land and 70.3 percent from the charity stripe. The Texans are averaging 69.6 points per game and 35.4 rebounds per game.
HOLDING OFF OPPONENTS
Opponent's are shooting just 37.7 percent overall and averaging 56.8 points per game against the Texans. Tarleton is No. 2 in the nation in points allowed and No. 3 in field goal percentage allowed.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Fabian Wilson is averaging team-highs in points with 13.3 per game and rebounds with 7.1 per game.
Chris Harrell is chipping in 12.8 points and shoots 81.9 percent from the free throw line, while Shedrick Haynes adds 10.7 points and 3.5 assists each contest.
SIZING UP THE OPPONENT
West Texas A&M is one of just four teams who knows what it feels like to be victorious over the Texans when they defeated Tarleton 62-53 on their home court a few weeks ago. The Texans will look to get revenge against the 19-7 Buffs.
WT leads the all-time series 22-16. The Buffs will be playing without their second leading scorer in Kennon Washington as he is out for the year with an injury.
STOPPING THE BUFFS
Overall, WT is averaging 65.5 points per game and holding opponents to 57.5 points each contest. That is second only to Tarleton in the LSC. The Buffs are shooting 48.2 percent from the floor, 32.6 percent from three-point range and 63.1 percent from free throw range.
WT is also No. 3 in the league in scoring margin, No. 1 in field goal percentage and No. 1 in rebounding margin.
WHO TO LOOK FOR
The Buffs have a number of talented athletes and proved that with a number of all-conference honors.
Donald Sims, the leading scorer for WT, was named LSC Newcomer of the Year and secdond team All-LSC. Lionel Foster leads the conference in assists and was also named second team All-LSC. Tez Dumars was named LSC Freshman of the Year after averaging 8.3 points per game.
Kennon Washington was named honorable mention All-LSC, but will not be playing Friday's game.
AMONG THE BEST
The Texans are ranked near the top of almost every statistical category in the conference.
Tarleton is No. 1 in scoring defense (56.8 ppg) and No. 1 in scoring margin (+12.8). The Texans are also No. 1 in field goal defense (.377), No. 2 in three-point field goal defense (30.0) and No. 2 in rebounding defense (29.7).
Individually,
Chris Harrell is No. 13 in scoring (12.8 ppg), while
Fabian Wilson is No. 3 in rebounding (7.1) and No.10 in scoring (13.3). Shedrick Haynes is No. 7 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2) as well as No. 6 in assists (3.6). Harrell and
Coleman Furst rank in the top four in free throw percentage.
WORKING TOWARDS LSC TITLE
Tarleton locked up their sixth regular season title last Saturday in the Texans' win over ACU. With the LSC not longer have divisions, it is a share of the championship. The LSC tournament champion will have the automatic bid in the NCAA tournament though.
REMAINING IN THE RANKINGS
Tarleton was ranked No. 8 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Polls and No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference Preseason poll.
The Texans are now No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the South Central Region.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Texans will face West Texas A&M on Friday in the semifinals of the LSC Tourney. If victorious, Tarleton will take on the winner of Cameron and top-seed Midwestern State on Saturday night in Allen for the championship.

Head coach
Lonn Reisman recently accomplished the feat of win No. 500 at Tarleton. He entered the season with a career record of 483-210.
