ABILENE – The Tarleton baseball team opened up their series with Abilene Christian on Friday with a 5-2 victory over the Wildcats.
The series got underway Friday night and host Abilene Christian got on the board first with a solo run in the second inning.
Tarleton was able to answer in the top of the fourth with two runs on back-to-back RBI doubles by freshmen Jonathan Schmitz and Landon Thompson, making it a 2-1 ball game.
ACU managed to tie the game up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning. That would be all the scoring they would get for the rest of the game though as they would be shutout over the final five innings.
In the seventh, Tarleton took a 4-2 lead with an RBI triple by Ryan Small, who then scored on an ACU error.
The Texans added a fifth run in the ninth on Blake Silguero's RBI double to right. That would be all Tarleton would need to down the Wildcats, 5-2.
Kenneth Stockton (1-2) got the start for the Texans and picked up the win. The senior righty tossed six innings, gave up just two runs, both unearned, on four hits. Britt Robertshaw (S,3) got the save after tossing two no-hit, shutout innings to end the game.
Thompson finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Schmitz and Silguero added RBI's to their two-hit performances.
The Texans and the Wildcats will continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field.
