SAN ANTONIO – The Tarleton baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader and in turn, the series after dropping game one 3-2 and winning the finale 14-9.
Game 1 – UIW 3, Tarleton 2
The Texans fell to the Cardinals in the first game of the Saturday series 3-2 despite taking an early lead. UIW got their winning run on a balk call in the bottom of the seventh.
Tarleton started off the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Schmitz in the second, giving the Texans an initial 1-0 lead.
UIW countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Blake Silguero blasted a solo home run to left center which tied the game at 2-2. That score remained until the faithful seventh.
With the bases loaded, the Cardinals got a two-out balk that plated the winning run for the host team.
Austin Coble (0-1) was saddled with the loss after his work in the seventh. Britt Robertshaw was effective as the starter for Tarleton, giving up just one earned run on six hits in six innings, while fanning seven.
Marc Gomez (3-0) went all seven innings for UIW and picked up the win.
The Texans had just three hits in the game, with RBI's coming from Silguero and Schmitz.
Game 2 – Tarleton 14, UIW 9
In the series finale, Tarleton got off to a slow start, but ended the game strong with five multi-run innings.
The Texans opened up the scoring in the second with an RBI groundout by Andy Wolfe.
The game remained close until the fourth inning when Tarleton exploded for seven runs in two innings. By the time the seventh inning rolled around, the Texans enjoyed a 8-1 advantage.
They didn't stop there though and scored two runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. UIW managed a six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough as the Cardinals drop the final game of the series to Tarleton 14-9.
The Texans got 13 RBI's on 13 hits from six different players. Wolfe led the way with five RBI's and a 2-for-6 day, while Ryan Small hit his fifth home run of the season, a grand slam in the fourth. Silguero also finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
Matt Buckmaster (4-1) got the win for Tarleton after holding UIW to just three runs, two earned, on eight hits in seven innings.
The Cardinals on the other hand used eight pitchers in the game with the loss going to Keith Vasquez (0-2).
The Texans will stay on the road to face Hardin Simmons on April 10 in Abilene.
