Texans tabbed as No. 5 in LSC Preseason Poll

SAN ANTONIO - The Lone Star Conference held their annual LSC Media Day at the Holiday Inn San Antonio International Airport Tuesday and announced the preseason poll and players of the year for the upcoming football season.

Tarleton was picked to finish fifth in the conference, just one season removed from a fourth-place finish.  The Texans received 131 points, just seven behind No. 4 Texas A&M-Kingsville.

After addressing the coaches and players, Tarleton head coach Cary Fowler expressed confidence in his team saying "I know the Lone Star Conference is a very tough football conference and whoever makes the playoffs from our conference has a good chance to win the national championship, and I expect our guys to be ready for the challenge and come out on top."

Midwestern State took last year's conference championship into the offseason and will enter the 2012 year as the top team in the LSC. Abilene Christian was named No. 2 preseason, followed by West Texas A&M, A&M-Kingsville and Tarleton.  Behind the Texans were No. 6 Angelo State, No. 7 Incarnate Word, No. 8 Eastern New Mexico, and No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce.

ACU quarterback Mitchell Gale was named LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year to go with his Division II Preseason Player of the Year accolade. On the defensive end, A&M-Kingsville linebacker Jeremy Aguilar was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

All of the head coaches spoke about the upcoming season and LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon discussed the upcoming changes to football in the conference, especially the focus on improvements in officiating.
