Men's Basketball Preview: McMurry

The Texans are back on track having won two straight games heading into Wednesday's contest.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Tarleton Texans (10-6, 4-5 LSC) will play its final non-conference game of the regular-season this Wednesday, Jan. 30, hosting the McMurry Warhawks (12-4, 5-4 HLC) at Wisdom Gym. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
 
QUICK HITS
• Tarleton picked up its first road win of the season and snapped a five-game losing streak away from Wisdom Gym with a come-from-behind win over A&M-Commerce on Saturday, defeating the Lions 70-61.
• Tarleton trailed by as many 12 points with a little over five minutes left to play in the first half. The Texans reeled off a 13-2 run to pull within a point (34-33) before the break, then used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to down the Lions on the road.
• Tarleton has now won five straight games over the Lions and have not lost in Commerce since 2007.
• This is McMurry's first season as a charter member of the Heartland Conference and member of NCAA Division II.
• The Warhawks are coming off a 67-57 win over UT-Permian Basin in Abilene last Saturday.
• McMurry has won two consecutive games and seven of its last nine contests.
• The Warhawks are 3-0 against LSC teams this season, defeating Cameron (76-56), Texas A&M-Kingsville (61-46) on the road, and Incarnate Word (76-68).
 
ABOUT THE WARHAWKS
• Head coach Chris Beard is in his first season with the Warhawks. He took over the program on May 14, 2012.
• Beard overall has 17 years of coaching experience from several different levels, including NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NJCAA, and most recently in professional basketball. This is his first season as a head coach at the DII level.
• The Warhawks are 12-4 overall in its first season at the NCAA Division II level. McMurry is also 5-4 on the season in league games, but the team is not eligible for the HLC tournament nor the NCAA championship tournament this season.
• Despite a  3-0 mark against LSC teams this season, only one of those victories came on the road (at Kingsville).
• The Warhawks are just 2-4 on the road this season, and despite losing by an average of 10.7 points, three of those four losses have been just nine-point losses or less. St. Mary's defeated the Warhawks by 21 points.
• McMurry averages 73.3 points a game and outscores its opponents by a margin of +9.9 points. The Warhawks are allowing just 63.4 points per contest, which ranks first in the HLC. That would rank 41st in the nation if the school was not reclassifying to DII.
• McMurry is shooting 47.8 percent from the field (third-best in HLC), 34.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 74.4 percent from the charity stripe (second-best in HLC).
• The Warhawks average 36.7 boards a game and are out-rebounding opponents by a +7.0 margin.
• Kenny Williams - a late transfer to McMurry - led the team with 20.1 points per game, but he is not longer with the team. Takoby Jackson now leads the squad with 13.0 points a game, which ranks eighth in the Heartland.
• Alfred Perez and Connor Robinson both average more than 5.5 boards per game. Perez leads the team with 14 blocks on the season.
• Antonio Bell runs the McMurry offense and leads the team with more than 50 assists on the season. Jackson leads the team defensively with 33 steals on the year.
 
SERIES HISTORY
• The Texans and Warhawks - formally known as the Indians - will meet for the 55th time dating back to 1961. McMurry leads the all-time series with 39 victories to just 15 losses.
• This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 1996.
• Despite the heavy loss to win ratio for the Texans, Tarleton has won four straight over McMurry and eight of the last 10.
• Head coach Lonn Reisman is 8-3 when facing McMurry.
• Tarleton is a perfect 6-0 when playing McMurry inside Wisdom Gym under head coach Lonn Reisman.
 
GIVE ME THAT ROAD WIN
• The Texans went into Saturday's game at A&M-Commerce have lost four straight games on the road this season. All four losses were to LSC teams and a fifth loss could severely dampen the Texans season.
• The game looked very bleak for the Texans at first as Tarleton fell behind by as many as 12 points with just over five minutes to play. Tarleton stormed back though, outscoring the Lions 50-29 over the final 25:24 (first and second half combined).
• The game was tied 43-43 at the 13:39 mark of the second half before the Texans reeled off a 17-2 run. Tarleton never looked back on the way to pickign up its first road victory of the season and first win away from Wisdom Gym since Mar. 10 of last season.
 
OFF THE SCHNIDE
• The last time a Tarleton team had dropped five straight games came back in 1995-96, and that streak did not continue this season as Tarleton defeated WTAMU 65-50 inside Wisdom Gym last Saturday.
 
UNCHARTED WATERS
• With the win over the Buffs, Tarleton avoided losing five straight games to LSC opponents for the first time ever in school history.
• Before Saturday's victory, Tarleton had a four-game losing streak to LSC opponents for the first-time ever since joining the league in 1994.
• The Texans have dropped three-straight games to LSC teams just seven times in school history.
 
NO MORE ROAD WOES
• With the win over the Lions, the Texans avoided going 0-5 on the road this season.
• The Texans had not won a contest away from Wisdom Gym in its previous five attempts dating back to last season's overtime loss to Arkansas Tech in the NCAA South Central Regional semifinal game.
• The last time a Tarleton team had dropped five-consecutive games away from home came back in the 1995-96 season.
 
WINNING AT WISDOM
• The Tarleton Texans are now 326-58 (.851) overall when playing inside the friendly confines of Wisdom Gym under head coach Lonn Reisman.
• Head coach Lonn Reisman won his 200th game since 2000 inside Wisdom Gym with the 65-50 over WTAMU. The Texans, since 2000, are now 200-25 (.892) at home under Reisman.
• Since joining NCAA Division II, Tarleton is 253-44 (.854) all-time at home.
 
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
• The last time national statistics came out, Tarleton ranked 12th in scoring defense. After giving up just 50 points to WT on Saturday, the Texans moved to 8th in the nation in scoring defense allowing opposing teams to just 59.1 points per game. Cal-Poly continues to lead the nation giving up just over 54 points per contest. Tarleton finished the past two seasons leading the country in scoring defense.
• Tarleton ranks 53rd in field goal percentage-defense, as opponents shoot just 40.6 percent from the floor.
• The Texans rank 29th in blocks per game, averaging 4.3 blocks against opposing teams.
 
CATHEY-MACKLIN AMONG NATION'S BEST
• Tarleton's Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) averages 1.4 blocks per game, which ranks first in the LSC and inside the top-100 in the nation.
• Cathey-Macklin recorded a new-season high with four blocks against the Lions. The big man leads the Texans with 22 blocked shots so far this season.
 
CATHEY-MACKLIN TABBED LSC DEFENSIVE POW
• Cathey-Macklin averaged 6.0 boards a game and was a huge part in the Texans allowing opposing teams to less than 55 points a contest and just 39.0 percent shooting from the field.
• The junior forward dominated opposing team's post players to score just a combined 20 points. ENMU's big men scored just four points in the contest and Cathey-Macklin helped limit WT's Donald Sims to just 10 points in Tarleton's 65-50 win over the Buffs.
• Cathey-Macklin became the first Tarleton player to earn LSC weekly honors for the 2012-13 season.
 
CARTER LEADING THE LSC
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) leads the LSC with a shooting percentage of 81.0 percent in 16 contests this season.
• Carter is 51-of-63 from the field this season.
• He would lead the nation in field goal shooting percentage, but he averages just under 3.5 field goals made per contest. To be considered nationally, the player must average at least 5.0 field goals made per game.
 
HOW THE LSC IS STACKING UP SO FAR
• The Texans were picked to win the LSC. Tarleton currently sits in a tie for fifth-place with West Texas A&M in the conference at 4-5.
• MSU, who was picked to finish second, is in a tie for first place with Cameron. Both squads have an 8-2 record in league play.
• WTAMU's Donald Sims was named the LSC's Preseason Player of the Year; he currently ranks 7th in scoring (13.7 ppg), first in rebounds (8.7 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.671).
 
OPENING UP THE LSC SCHEDULE
• Tarleton dropped its LSC opener for the first time since Jan. 14, 2009 with its five-point loss to Angelo State on Wednesday.
• The Texans are now 12-7 in LSC openers since joining the league in 1994.
 
TEXANS PICKED TO WIN LSC
• The Texans were selected to defend its LSC Championship, earning the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll released by the league office on Oct. 25, 2012.
• Tarleton received 12 of a possible 29 first-place votes in the poll.
• Midwestern State received 12 first-place votes in the poll as well, but Tarleton took the top spot earning 269 total points to MSU's 262.
 
TEXANS DEBUT 2012-13 SEASON AT NO. 17 IN NABC PRESEASON POLL
• The Texans finished the 2011-12 campaign at No. 9 in the nation and head into the new season at No. 17 according to a preseason poll released by the NABC on Nov. 2.
• Tarleton was the highest ranked LSC team in the preseason poll. MSU debuts at No. 23 in 2012-13 after finishing No. 5 last season.
• Including the 2012-13 campaign, Tarleton has been preseason ranked inside the top-25 seven times.
 
TARLETON IN SEASON-OPENERS
• Tarleton snapped a 10-game winning streak in season openers after falling 73-60 to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the 2012-13 opening game. Tarleton fell to 21-4 in season-openers under coach Reisman.
• Tarleton's last loss in a season-opener had come back in 2001 against Wingate (73-83).
 
REISMAN AMONG WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES IN NATION
Lonn Reisman entered the 2012-13 season with a .702 winning percentage, which ranks 12th overall among active coaches in NCAA D-II.
• Reisman's .702 winning percentage ranks 26th overall among active coaches in both NCAA Division I and II.
 
TEXANS RANKED NO. 1 IN DEFENSE LAST SEASON
• The Texans finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in scoring defense for a second-straight year after allowing opponents to just 56.3 points per game in 2012-13. The Texans allowed just 53.3 points to finish no. 1 in 2010-11.
 
UP NEXT
• Tarleton remains at home this Saturday, Feb. 2 to host A&M-Commerce. The two teams will meet for the second time in a week to close-out LSC Rivalry Week.
