Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton's
Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded his first double-double of his career for the Texans, recording career-highs in points (17) and rebounds (11) while helping the home team to a non-conference victory over McMurry, 65-52, Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym.
Cathey-Macklin had seven offensive boards on the night and his final one came at the 1:08 mark of the contest. He then tipped the ball in for his 17
th point of the evening and it secured a 10-point lead for the Texans. McMurry's Brock Kimball missed a three-pointer at the other end of the floor and Tarleton prevailed on the way to the 13-point victory.
The Texans (11-6) led by just two points at the break, up 31-29, and both teams traded baskets over the first 12 minutes of the second half. The first 12 minutes of play in the second period saw three ties and five different lead changes.
The game was tied 47-47 with 1:18 left to play until
De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) hit his fourth three-pointer of the night to put the Texans up 50-47 with 7:51 left to play. The shot lifted the Texans to a 7-0 run and Tarleton never looked back.
The Warhawks (12-5) would only get back within four points of the home team on a couple of free throws from Takoby Jackson at the 2:31 mark, but the Texans scored the game's final nine points on the way to the 65-52 win.
shot 47.8 percent from the field in the first half to take the two-point lead into the locker room. The team went 4-for-11 from the three-point line in the first 20 minutes of the game and shot 83.3 percent from the charity stripe as well, going 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
McMurry scored the first bucket of the game – a three-pointer from Jackson with just 12 second off the clock – but, Tarleton came right back and
Brian Word's (G, Sr, Baltimore, Md.) three-pointer at the other end of the floor ignited a 12-2 run to give Tarleton a 12-5 lead with just over 15 minutes left in the half.
The Warhawks came back and tied the game 17-17 on a jumper from Kaylim Noel with 8:27, but McMurry would only take a two point lead on two separate occasions before the Texans went up by five with 1:58 left in the half, up 29-24 on a put-back lay-up from
Damion Clemons (F, So, Dallas).
McMurry did however close out the half with a 5-2 run to pull within a couple of points of the Texans and go into the break, down 31-29.
Cathey-Macklin led the Texans at the break scoring eight of his season-high 17 points in the first half, while
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) dished out five assists and pulled down five boards.
Along with Cathey-Macklin's 17 points for the evening, Guy and Upchurch each tallied 12 points while Clemons poured in a new career-high 11 points. Guy finished with a career-high eight rebounds and had seven assists in the game.
Tarleton finished the game shooting 45.8 percent from the field and were 9-for-23 from beyond the arc.
After the Warhawks shot 44.8 percent from the field in the first half, Tarleton's defense clamped down on the visiting team and McMurry left the game shooting just 39.6 percent from the floor as a team.
Jackson led all scorers with 21 points on the night. He too collected a double-double as he finished the game with 11 points. McMurry's Alfred Perez, who led the team at the break with eight points, tallied a total of 13 points in the game.
The Texans out-rebounded the visiting team 34-29 and had two less turnovers then McMurry did as well. Tarleton had 12 second-chance points and scored 17 points off the 12 McMurry turnovers.
The Texans return to Lone Star Conference play this Saturday, as A&M-Commerce heads to town. The two teams just met last Saturday with Tarleton picking up its first win on the road. The two teams will close-out LSC Rivalry Week at Wisdom Gym on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
