TEXANS CLINCH SHARE OF LSC TITLE
With its 45-20 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville this past Saturday, the Texans clinched at least a share of the LSC title for the first time since 2009 and the third time in school history.
Â
Tarleton completed its LSC slate of games this past Saturday against the Javelinas, rounding out the season with a 5-1 mark in LSC play.
Â
The Texans have an outside chance at clinching the title outright following West Texas A&M's 39-38 loss to Eastern New Mexico last weekend, but will need help over the final two weeks of the season.
Â
Both ENMU and Midwestern State enter the weekend with just one conference loss, but will face each other this Saturday. Should the winner between the Greyhounds and Mustangs lose in the season's final game, the Texans would claim the outright LSC title.
Â
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Southwestern Oklahoma head coach Dan Cocannauer is just 12-31 overall in his fifth season with the Bulldogs, but he brings his team in Saturday's contest with a winning record at 5-4 on the season.
Â
Saturday's contest marks the first non-conference game for the Bulldogs.
Â
SWOSU is coming off a 42-14 win over Southern Nazarene this past Saturday, in a game that the Bulldogs accumulated 609 yards of total offense. SWOSU tallied 356 yards through the air and 253 yards on the ground in the game, while the defense limited SNU to just 243 total yards and just 71 yards rushing.
Â
Quarterback Dustin Stenta completed 22-of-29 passes for a season-best 336 yards and four touchdowns in the lopsided victory. The yardage mark is fifth-best single-game total in school history and the four touchdowns ties a career high and is the second-best single-game mark in SWOSU history.
Â
Stenta has already passed for 2,291 yards on the season and is just 579 yards shy of breaking his own single-season school record for passing yardage. He averaged 254.6 yards per game on the season, which ranks fifth among quarterbacks in the Great American Conference.
Â
Running back D.C. Walker leads the team with 627 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns, while averaging 69.7 yards per game on the ground. Ryan Corbin leads the wide receiving corps with 57 catches for 705 yards and six touchdowns. He is averaging just over 78 receiving yards per game.
Â
Statistically the Bulldogs rank in the middle of the pack among GAC teams. SWOSU is averaging 26.4 points per game (8th in GAC) and are giving up 24.2 points per game (5th) on defense. The Bulldog offense is averaging 420.7 yards per game (7th), while the defense is limiting opposing teams to 383.1 yards per game (5th).
Â
SERIES HISTORY
Tarleton leads the all-time series with a record of 14-10 and have won six consecutive games between the two teams heading into Saturday's contest.
Â
The two teams have not met since 2009, which was SWOSU's second to last season as a member of the Lone Star Conference. While the two teams were both members of the LSC, Tarleton won 10 out of 11 games against the Bulldogs. Prior to its first meeting as LSC foes in 1999, SWOSU had led the all-time series 9-4.
Â
The last time Tarleton faced SWOSU, the Texans downed the Bulldogs 66-3 in Stephenville. Tarleton tallied 453 yards of total offense while holding the Bulldogs to just 184 total yards.
Â
SWOSU's last win against the Texans came back on Sept. 8, 2003 - a 21-17 victory over the Texans in Weatherford, Okla. The Bulldogs last win over the Texans in Stephenville came back on Oct. 2, 1993 (12-7).
Â
A WIN OVER THE BULLDOGS WOULD...
• Push Tarleton's win streak over SWOSU to seven straight games.
• Extend Tarleton's home win streak over SWOSU to seven consecutive victories as well.
• Give the Texans a 2-1 record against non-conference opponents in 2013.
• Snap Tarleton's one game home losing streak.
Â
