Tashawn Mabry knocked down two three-pointers and went 10-for-13 from the free throw line on his way to scoring a team-high 20 points off the bench and guiding the No. 11-ranked Texans to an 89-83 non-conference win over McMurry at Wisdom Gym Tuesday night in Stephenville.
The Texans pushed its best season start under head coach
Lonn Reisman to 8-0, while extending its home court winning streak to 15 straight games.
It was not one of Tarleton's best offensive performances of the season, shooting just 37.3 percent from the field, but the Texans did manage to make 41 of its 54 attempts (75.9%) from the free throw line and forced 22 turnovers.
Tarleton scored 23 points off those turnovers and had just 12 turnovers while coming away with its closest margin of victory on the season.
The Texans led by as many as five points early in the contest before giving up its first lead to an opposing team this season when McMurry's Thiago Randazzo knocked down a three-pointer at the 10:58 mark of the first half to take a 22-19 lead.
Tarleton would later comeback to tie the game at 24-24 on a three-pointer from De'Andre Upchurch, but McMurry's Brandon Golden put the War Hawks back on top 26-24 with a jumper at the 9:22 mark.
The game would see four more ties in the final nine minutes of the first half before McMurry went back on top 36-35 with a little over a minute left to play before the intermission. Following a couple of free throws from the visiting team, McMurry led 38-35, but Mabry pulled the Texans back to within a point with a pair of his free throws and
Michael Hardge tied the game at 38-38 as both teams headed to the locker room.
Between five different ties, the Texans would only go up by as many as four points over the course of the first 10 minutes of the second half, but McMurry would only go up by as many as two points between those ties to keep the Texans in the game.
Another seven ties and nine different lead changes would continue down the stretch, but again the War Hawks would not take a lead by more than two points before Mabry hit his second three-pointer at the 3:17 mark to take away McMurry's momentum and put the Texans on top 79-76.
Chuck Guy would later pour in a lay-up at the 2:36 mark to push Tarleton's lead to 81-76, but McMurry came right back with a jumper from Golden to make it an 81-78 game. The Texans would then close out the final two minutes of play with a 7-5 run.
The Texans would get clutch free throws over the final 13 seconds from both Mohammed Lee and Mabry as Tarleton pushed its lead to six points en route to the home-court victory.
The Texans out-rebounded the War Hawks 37-35 and tallied 11 steals in the game as well. Guy led the way with his six steals and he managed to dish out a game-high five assists as well.
Damion Clemons scored a career-high for the Texans in his 20 minutes off the bench and Lee added 13 points off the bench as well. Guy led all starters for the Texans with 11 points.
McMurry was led by Golden's game-high 23 points and Alfred Perez poured in 17 points for the War Hawks as well.
The War Hawks finished the game shooting 55.8 percent from the field, but were just 17-for-26 (65.4%) from the charity stripe.
Tarleton scored 54 points off the bench, while McMurry managed just 14 points from its non-starters.
McMurry fell to 4-4 overall on the season and have now dropped six straight games to the Texans dating back to 1992.
The Texans' 15-game home win streak is tied for fourth longest in school history. The last time a Tarleton team had a 15-game home win streak came back in the 2011-12 season.
Tarleton will hit the road for the first time this season as the team travels to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend to participate in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. The Texans will take on Central Washington on Saturday before closing out the tournament against No. 5-ranked Western Washington on Sunday.
