STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State junior Mohammed Lee scored a career-high 23 points off the bench to help guide the No. 14-ranked Texans to a 90-35 win over the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym.
Tarleton improved to 7-0 and have started the season with seven straight wins for the first time since becoming a senior college in 1961-62, and has scored at least 75 points or more in seven straight games for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign.
Lee scored 23 of Tarleton's 57 points off the bench and
Chuck Guy continued his strong play as he led all starters with 17 points. The Texans combined to shoot 40.6 percent from three-point range, draining 13 three-pointers as a team with Guy knocking down four three-pointers and Lee going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Tarleton never trailed in the game as they limited the Aggies to just 24.1 percent shooting, while giving up its lowest point total to an opponent since a 104-32 defeat over Hillsdale Baptist back on Nov. 23, 2010.
The Texans opened the game with an 8-0 run and then after going up 12-7 with 14:52 left to play in the first half, Tarleton outscored the Aggies 26-2 over the course of the next nine minutes to extend its lead to 38-9 at the 5:50 mark.
Tarleton then closed out the first half with a 7-2 run to take a 31-point lead into the break, up 45-14.
The Aggies would only get within 30 points of the Texans on two separate occasions in the second half, but a three-pointer from Lee pushed Tarleton's lead to 40 points, up 62-24 with 12:27 left in the contest.
OPSU's final field goal came with 2:49 left to play, making it an 83-35 game, but Tarleton closed out the contest with six straight points en route to the 90-35 win.
The Texans came into the game leading the nation with a 41.7 margin of victory and will now go into a 13-day break, defeating teams by an average of 43.6 points per game following the 55-point victory.
Tarleton finished the game with 50 rebounds as
Davene Carter pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while both
Jon Cathey-Macklin and
Damion Clemons grabbed seven boards each. The Texans have now posted 50 rebounds or more in three of its seven games so far this season.
Guy dished out a game-high seven of Tarleton's 21 assists and Carter tallied three of the team's six blocked shots.
Tarleton recorded 10 steals and scored 27 points off OPSU's 15 total turnovers. Meanwhile, the Texans turned the ball over just seven times and did not allow the Aggies to score on any of those possessions.
The Texans shot 49.2 percent from the field and have shot at least 45 percent or better in its first seven contests on the season. After shooting just 60 percent from the charity stripe in the first half, the Texans came back to make 10-of-13 from the free throw line in the second half to finish the game at 72.2 percent.
Tarleton will have 13 days until its next contest when the team closes out its eight-game home stretch against McMurry on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Tip-off between the Texans and Warhawks is set for 8 p.m. in Stephenville.
