Texans looking for third-straight win over LSC opponent

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Tarleton Texans (11-6, 4-5 LSC) return to Lone Star Conference action this Saturday, Feb. 2, closing out LSC Rivalry Week with a home contest against A&M-Commerce (11-8, 4-5 LSC). Tip-off between the Texans and Lions is set for 7 p.m. inside Wisdom Gym.
 
QUICK HITS
• Tarleton closed out January with a three-game winning streak following it's 65-52 non-conference win over McMurry on Wednesday.
• The Texans have now won seven-consecutive games over non-conference schools and finish the 2012-13 regular-season with a mark of 7-1 against non-LSC teams. Tarleton's only loss came in the season opener to Southwestern Assemblies of the God (60-73).
• Tarleton's Jon Cathey-Macklin recorded his first career double-double with a season-high 17 points and a season-high 11 rebounds in the Texan's 13-point win.
Chuck Guy recorded a career-high eight rebounds on Wednesday and came within an assist shy of tying his career mark in that category as well.
• A&M-C has not played since falling 70-61 to the Texans last Saturday. When the Lions hit the floor on Saturday, they will have played just two games in a span of 14 days.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS
• The Lions have not played since falling 70-61 to the Texans in Commerce last Saturday.
• A&M-Commerce's record is now at 11-8 overall and 4-5 in the LSC.
• A&M-C moved to 6-2 when playing inside TAMUC Fieldhouse this season after losing to Tarleton.
• The Lions are just 3-5 on the road this season, which includes having won just one LSC contest (90-88, at ACU) on the road this year.
• Head coach Sam Walker is in his 13th season at the helm of the Lions basketball program. He brings in an overall record of 203-156 when he meets the Texans this Saturday.
• Walker faced Midwestern State on Jan. 9, 2013, and his Lions rallied from
a double-digit first half deficit to down the Mustangs 74-66, which gave
Walker his 202nd career victory. That win moved Walker past Jim Gudger
(1969-83) as the all-time winningest coach in A&M-C history, encompassing
not just the men's basketball program but every Lion athletic team.
• A&M-C is averaging 76.0 points per game, which ranks second in the LSC behind UIW's 76.9 ppg. The Lion defense is giving up 72.8 points, which is seventh most in the league.
• The Lions are shooting 44.7 percent from the field as a team (5th in the LSC) and are allowing opponents to shoot 43.7 percent from the floor.
• A&M-C is shooting 36.4 percent from beyond the arc (4th in LSC) and 67.6 percent from the charity stripe (also 4th in the LSC).
• Preston Whitley, a senior forward for the Lions, leads the squad with 14.6 points a game. Stefon Carson, a senior guard, is second on the team with
11.1 points per contest.
• Other notable leaders for the Lions include Andrew Davis (7.3 rebounds);
Jason Smith (56 assists); and Tyrie Wooten (28 steals).
 
SERIES HISTORY
• The Lions lead the all-time series 28-26, but Tarleton has won the previous five contests between the two teams, including last Saturday's 70-61 come-from-behind victory.
• Tarleton's last defeat to the Lions came back on Nov. 25, 2008 inside
Wisdom Gym (67-85).
• The Texans improved to 9-9 when playing the Lions in Commerce, and have won the last three meetings inside The Fieldhouse.
• The last time Tarleton dropped a game to the Lions in Commerce came back on Dec. 6, 2007. The Texans fell 52-72 after trailing by just five points
(27-32) at the break. Tarleton shot just 27 percent from the field though, in the second half, and A&M-C shot better than 44 percent.
• Head coach Lonn Reisman is now 22-15 overall against the Lions.
• Reisman is 13-5 when playing the Lions in Stephenville. A win on Saturday would tie the longest home win streak (four games) over A&M-C.
• The Texans won four-straight against the Lions at home from Feb. 22, 1997 through Feb. 10, 2000, before falling 70-61 inside Wisdom Gym on Jan. 18, 2001.
 
GIVE ME THAT ROAD WIN
• The Texans went into Saturday's game at A&M-Commerce have lost four straight games on the road this season. All four losses were to LSC teams and a fifth loss could severely dampen the Texans season.
• The game looked very bleak for the Texans at first as Tarleton fell behind by as many as 12 points with just over five minutes to play. Tarleton stormed back though, outscoring the Lions 50-29 over the final 25:24 (first and second half combined).
• The game was tied 43-43 at the 13:39 mark of the second half before the Texans reeled off a 17-2 run. Tarleton never looked back on the way to pickign up its first road victory of the season and first win away from Wisdom Gym since Mar. 10 of last season.
 
OFF THE SCHNIDE
• The last time a Tarleton team had dropped five straight games came back in 1995-96, and that streak did not continue this season as Tarleton defeated WTAMU 65-50 inside Wisdom Gym last Saturday.
 
UNCHARTED WATERS
• With the win over the Buffs, Tarleton avoided losing five straight games to LSC opponents for the first time ever in school history.
• Before Saturday's victory, Tarleton had a four-game losing streak to LSC opponents for the first-time ever since joining the league in 1994.
• The Texans have dropped three-straight games to LSC teams just seven times in school history.
 
NO MORE ROAD WOES
• With the win over the Lions, the Texans avoided going 0-5 on the road this season.
• The Texans had not won a contest away from Wisdom Gym in its previous five attempts dating back to last season's overtime loss to Arkansas Tech in the NCAA South Central Regional semifinal game.
• The last time a Tarleton team had dropped five-consecutive games away from home came back in the 1995-96 season.
 
WINNING AT WISDOM
• The Tarleton Texans are now 327-58 (.851) overall when playing inside the friendly confines of Wisdom Gym under head coach Lonn Reisman.
• The Texans moved to 201-25 (.892) playing under Reisman inside Wisdom Gym since 2000.
• Since joining NCAA Division II, Tarleton is 254-44 (.854) all-time at home.
 
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
• The last time national statistics came out, Tarleton ranked 12th in scoring defense. After giving up just 50 points to WT on Saturday, the Texans moved to 8th in the nation in scoring defense allowing opposing teams to just 59.1 points per game. Cal-Poly continues to lead the nation giving up just over 54 points per contest. Tarleton finished the past two seasons leading the country in scoring defense.
• Tarleton ranks 53rd in field goal percentage-defense, as opponents shoot just 40.6 percent from the floor.
• The Texans rank 29th in blocks per game, averaging 4.3 blocks against opposing teams.
 
CATHEY-MACKLIN AMONG NATION'S BEST
• Tarleton's Jon Cathey-Macklin (F, Jr, Milwaukee, Wis.) averages 1.4 blocks per game, which ranks first in the LSC and inside the top-100 in the nation.
• Cathey-Macklin recorded a new-season high with four blocks against the Lions. The big man leads the Texans with 22 blocked shots so far this season.
 
CATHEY-MACKLIN TABBED LSC DEFENSIVE POW
• Cathey-Macklin averaged 6.0 boards a game and was a huge part in the Texans allowing opposing teams to less than 55 points a contest and just 39.0 percent shooting from the field.
• The junior forward dominated opposing team's post players to score just a combined 20 points. ENMU's big men scored just four points in the contest and Cathey-Macklin helped limit WT's Donald Sims to just 10 points in Tarleton's 65-50 win over the Buffs.
• Cathey-Macklin became the first Tarleton player to earn LSC weekly honors for the 2012-13 season.
 
CARTER LEADING THE LSC
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) leads the LSC with a shooting percentage of 81.0 percent in 16 contests this season.
• Carter is 51-of-63 from the field this season.
• He would lead the nation in field goal shooting percentage, but he averages just under 3.5 field goals made per contest. To be considered nationally, the player must average at least 5.0 field goals made per game.
 
HOW THE LSC IS STACKING UP SO FAR
• The Texans were picked to win the LSC. Tarleton currently sits in a tie for fifth-place with West Texas A&M in the conference at 4-5.
• MSU, who was picked to finish second, is in a tie for first place with Cameron. Both squads have an 8-2 record in league play.
• WTAMU's Donald Sims was named the LSC's Preseason Player of the Year; he currently ranks 7th in scoring (13.7 ppg), first in rebounds (8.7 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.671).
 
OPENING UP THE LSC SCHEDULE
• Tarleton dropped its LSC opener for the first time since Jan. 14, 2009 with its five-point loss to Angelo State on Wednesday.
• The Texans are now 12-7 in LSC openers since joining the league in 1994.
 
TEXANS PICKED TO WIN LSC
• The Texans were selected to defend its LSC Championship, earning the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll released by the league office on Oct. 25, 2012.
• Tarleton received 12 of a possible 29 first-place votes in the poll.
• Midwestern State received 12 first-place votes in the poll as well, but Tarleton took the top spot earning 269 total points to MSU's 262.
 
TEXANS DEBUT 2012-13 SEASON AT NO. 17 IN NABC PRESEASON POLL
• The Texans finished the 2011-12 campaign at No. 9 in the nation and head into the new season at No. 17 according to a preseason poll released by the NABC on Nov. 2.
• Tarleton was the highest ranked LSC team in the preseason poll. MSU debuts at No. 23 in 2012-13 after finishing No. 5 last season.
• Including the 2012-13 campaign, Tarleton has been preseason ranked inside the top-25 seven times.
 
TARLETON IN SEASON-OPENERS
• Tarleton snapped a 10-game winning streak in season openers after falling 73-60 to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the 2012-13 opening game. Tarleton fell to 21-4 in season-openers under coach Reisman.
• Tarleton's last loss in a season-opener had come back in 2001 against Wingate (73-83).
 
REISMAN AMONG WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES IN NATION
Lonn Reisman entered the 2012-13 season with a .702 winning percentage, which ranks 12th overall among active coaches in NCAA D-II.
• Reisman's .702 winning percentage ranks 26th overall among active coaches in both NCAA Division I and II.
 
TEXANS RANKED NO. 1 IN DEFENSE LAST SEASON
• The Texans finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in scoring defense for a second-straight year after allowing opponents to just 56.3 points per game in 2012-13. The Texans allowed just 53.3 points to finish no. 1 in 2010-11.
 
UP NEXT
• Tarleton will close-out its three-game home stand with a mid-week affair against Angelo State next Wednesday, Feb. 6. Tip-off between the Texans and Rams is set for 7 p.m. inside Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
