STEPHENVILLE - The No. 28 ranked Tarleton TexAnn tennis team dropped its season opener Friday afternoon to Division I Lamar University.
"We competed hard and I'm proud of them for that," said head coach Lance Drake. "We had our chances to get a couple of wins in their but they're good and its our first action of the season. Hopefully we can learn from it and come back strong tomorrow."
The day began with doubles action where Tarleton's No. 1 seeded team of Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez went down to the wire with Lamar's Carolina Salas and Helene Czudek. The TexAnn tandem fell 6-8 in the top seeded match.
Makenzie Mitchell and April Downing were the No. 2 seed and fell 2-8 while Melanie Barnes and Ivana Zecevic dropped the No. 3 match 5-8.
In the singles action, Martinez forced a tiebreaker in the No. 2 seed match. The senior from Mexico fell 6-7, 6-3, 8-10 to Lamar's Alicia Porte.
Perez (4-6, 0-6) dropped her match in the No. 1 seed while Barnes (2-6, 3-6), Mitchell (2-6, 0-6), Silvia Nieva (1-6, 1-6), Zecevic (3-6, 3-6) and April Downing (2-8) also fell in singles play.
The TexAnns will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host North Central Texas College.
