Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton snapped its two-game losing skid with a 96-58 blowout victory against Eastern New Mexico in the season's final game at Wisdom Gym.
The TexAnns (18-7, 14-5) and Zias (7-20, 6-13) have already locked up berths in the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament in Allen next weekend.
With the win, Tarleton maintains control of its own destiny for third place in the LSC. With the loss and a loss by Texas A&M-Commerce, the Zias will host the Lions Saturday with a chance to earn the No. 7 seed in the tournament.
Cheyenne Berry got the scoring started for Tarleton by taking a defensive rebound coast-to-coast for a fastbreak layup at the 18:35 mark of the opening quarter. The layup was the start of an 8-0 Tarleton run to open the game.
With the TexAnns leading 8-0, Eastern New Mexico answered by scoring nine unanswered to take its first lead of the night at 9-8.
Keyra Johnson stopped the Zia run with a layup of her own to put the TexAnns back on top. The Zias responded with four unanswered to take their biggest – and final – lead of the night 13-10 with 13 minutes to play.
Peyton Adamson hit a layup at the 12:46 mark to start a 9-0 Tarleton run and ultimately a 35-14 run over the rest of the first half to take a game-high 18-point lead into halftime.
In just the first 20 minutes of game time, Tarleton outscored Eastern New Mexico 32-12 in the paint, 14-4 on fastbreak points and 18-6 off the bench.
Johnson matched her career high in points in just the first half, scoring 12 off the bench. Berry also had 10 points in the first half while
Kiara Wright was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Tarleton continued to pour it on in the second half, starting with a 3-ball by
Brianna Bledsoe 52 seconds into the fresh half.
The TexAnns stayed in control over the entire second half, pushing the lead to as many as 38 and never leading by less than 19.
Wright finished the game as the scoring leader with 18 points and maintained her national lead in rebounding and double-doubles with 22 rebounds en route to her 20
th double-double of the season. She now owns four of the six total 20-rebound games in Tarleton's 18-year NCAA history.
Adamson (16), Johnson (14), Berry (12) also cracked double figures while every TexAnn on the active roster recorded a point in the contest. Johnson's 14 were a career high and
Kimber Koonsman also set a career-best scoring effort with seven off the bench.
Raven McGrath's 5 points tied her career high.
Tarleton shot 63 percent (38-60) from the floor, 53 percent (8-15) from beyond the arc and 71 percent (12-17) from the free throw line. The TexAnns won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Zias 54-30 and outrebounding them 36-31.
The TexAnns will travel to Canyon Saturday for the regular season finale at 4 p.m. against West Texas A&M from the First United Bank Center.
