STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Tarleton Texans outscored Angelo State 46-23 in the second half on the way to downing the Rams 67-44 in Lone Star Conference action at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville on Wednesday night.
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) came within two points of tying his career-high 25 point effort – which he just recorded four days ago – but, instead tallied a game-high 23 points and scoring more than 20 points for a team-leading fourth time this season.
The Texans forced 18 turnovers on Wednesday and scored 21 points off those turnovers to help distance themselves from the Rams after both teams were tied 21-21 at the break.
The Rams led by as many as nine points on one occasion in the first half. ASU led 19-10 following a three-pointer from Antoinio Dye at the 8:15 mark. Tarleton erased the deficit though, going on an 11-0 run to take the lead 21-19 with 1:56 left to play in the first half. ASU managed to get a pair of free throws from Jovan Austin at the 1:29 mark to tie the game and neither team scored again going into the locker room with the score all knotted up.
The Texans shot just 28.6 percent from the field in the first half, going just 1-for-6 from downtown. ASU shot just 27.3 percent themselves, but were a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Tarleton did force 10 Ram turnovers and those miscues led to 10 points for the Texans.
The Texans came out scoring the second period's first nine points and the 9-0 run gave Tarleton a 30-21 advantage. ASU managed to finally stop the run at the 16:10 mark, giving the Rams its first field goal since Dye's three-pointer at the 8:15 point of the first half.
The Rams scored four of the game's next six points, but Guy helped put the game out of reach with back-to-back three-pointers. His buckets from downtown opened a 12-1 run from the Texans and Tarleton never looked back.
The Texans pushed its lead to 44-26 with just over 10 minutes and later made it a 20-point game, up 56-36 with less than four minutes in the contest. Tarleton would eventually lead the contest by as many as 25 points, up 64-39 following a free throw from
De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) at the 1:32 mark.
“I thought our offense did a great job in the second half,” Tarleton head coach
Lonn Reisman said following the win. “Our guards did a good job managing the game and our big-men down low did a great job scoring in the paint.
The Texans (13-6, 6-5 LSC) moved above the .500 mark for the first time in over a month after picking up its season-high fifth win in-a-row. The Rams (5-16, 2-11 LSC) have now dropped six straight and moved to 0-10 playing on the road.
The Texans shot lights out in the second half, making 14-of-21 (.667) from the field in the final 20 minutes to finish the game shooting 47.6 percent from the field. The Texans out-rebounded its opponent for a sixth straight game, winning the battle of the boards 31-27 on the evening.
The Texans return to the road for the first time in two weeks this Saturday, Feb. 9, as the team travels to Abilene to face the Abilene Christian Wildcats. Tip-off is set for 7:30 inside Moody Coliseum.
