Baseball Preview: at Ouachita Baptist

Texans and Tigers set for double-dip on Saturday and Sunday.

Miguel Ramirez made his first start in nearly two years last Saturday. He gave up just two runs in 6.0 innings while earning a no decision.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Tarleton baseball team will head to Arkadelphia, Ark., this weekend to face the Ouachita Baptist Tigers in non-conference action on the diamond. The Texans and Tigers are set to play a four-game series with a pair of doubleheaders to be played on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch in game one of both doubleheaders is set for noon.
 
The Texans (2-1) are coming off a weekend where it won a pair of contests at the Astros in Action D-II Invitational in Houston last week. Tarleton picked up wins over Arkansas Tech and Emporia State in the tournament and dropped just one contest to Arkansas-Monticello.
 
OBU (0-4) is coming off a 0-4 weekend after hosting Angelo State. The Tigers were outscored 32-9 in four games as it opened the 2013 campaign against the Rams.
 
The Tigers lead the all-time series 4-2, but the two teams have not met since Mar. 3, 2009. The Texans won the contest 8-5 against the then No. 18-ranked Tigers on a neutral field in McKinney.
 
Colten Boothe (INF, Jr, Buda) leads the Texans at the plate early in the season, as he is batting a team-high .444. He has four hits in nine trips to the plate, with two of his base-knocks going for doubles. Alavaro Moreno (INF/DH, Jr, McAllen) is behind him batting .364 with a home run and a team-leading three runs batted in.
 
Rustin Thomas (OF, Jr, Mansfield) leads the squad with four runs scored, while Nico Moran (OF, Jr, Longview) is the only Texan with a stolen base (1) this season.
 
The Texans have a combined .242 batting average and a .341 slugging percentage after just three games so far this season.
 
Matt Buckmaster (LHP, Sr, Holliday) and Pete Perez (RHP, Sr, Hagatna, Guam) recorded wins for the Texans this past weekend and are both 1-0 on the season. Buckmaster did not allow a run and gave up just three hits in his 6.2 innings of work last Sunday. He struck out seven batters and walked three. Perez was just as dominate, giving up just one run on six hits and striking out eight. Between both starting pitchers, opposing hitters are hitting just .173.
 
Garrett Kelly (RHP, Jr, Corpus Christi), who made three appearances this past weekend, leads the team with one save. He recorded the save on Sunday, shutting down the Hornets to give Tarleton a combined shutout as well.
 
Perez is scheduled to make the start in game one on Saturday with Miguel Ramirez  (RHP, Jr, Gallup, N.M.; 0-0) taking the mound in the nightcap.
