CANYON - Tarleton dropped its regular season finale to West Texas A&M 67-62 at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
With the loss, West Texas A&M jumped into the No. 3 seed of the Lone Star Conference Tournament next week and locked Tarleton into the No. 4 seed.
Tarleton started the game on fire, jumping out to a quick 10-0 lead over the first 4:42. The run started with a Kiara Wright layup off a pass from Brianna Bledsoe and was capped with a 3-ball from Bledsoe at 15:49.
The TexAnns pushed their lead to 11 at 13-2 before the Lady Buffs answered back with an 8-0 run of their own to bring the game back to three at 13-10 with nine minutes left in the first half.
Cheyenne Berry put a stop to the TexAnn scoreless run with a layup that started a 10-2 Tarleton run over the next three minutes to push the Tarleton lead back to double figures at 23-12.
Tarleton maintained its lead over the rest of the first half, leading by as many as nine over the final 5:25 and not less than five.
West Texas came out of the break swinging, opening the new half on a 13-5 run to bring the game within one point at 34-33 with 15:47 left.
Wright responded for Tarleton with a layup to extend the lead back to three with just over 14 minutes left. Her layup started a 7-2 run over the next three minutes which gave Tarleton a 41-35 lead with 12:01 to go.
The Lady Buffs managed to bring the game to its first tie at 45-45 with 8:14 left in the contest but Berry put Tarleton back on top with back-to-back buckets to make the score 49-45 Tarleton with 6:38 left.
Tarleton kept a three-point lead to the 4:29 mark but West Texas A&M finished the game on an 18-10 run to take its first and final lead of the game en route to the win.
Wright recorded her first career double-double against the Lady Buffs and has now recorded at least one double-double against every member of the Lone Star Conference. She scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds Saturday and is the national leader in double-doubles with 21 this season.
Bledsoe (14), Berry (13) and Morgan Ashmore (10) also cracked double figures for Tarleton.
The TexAnns are scheduled to Thursday night at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. Tarleton will open the tournament with a rematch of last year's championship game against Incarnate Word.
