No. 28 Tarleton tennis wins LSC opener at Kingsville

Melanie Barnes won the No. 2 seed match against Texas A&M-Kingsville 6-2, 6-1 Saturday.

KINGSVILLE – No. 28 Tarleton swept its Lone Star Conference opener in Kingsville by winning all nine matches against Javelinas Saturday afternoon.
 
“The girls played really well today,” said head coach Lance Drake. “It looked like we came out with a lot more purpose and focus today than we have over the past couple of weeks.”
 
Tarleton opened the day by taking all three doubles matches, two them by an 8-1 margin.
 
Karla Martinez and Marina Rull paired up to handle the No. 1 match and handled their business despite allowing Kingsville to score five points. The tandem won 8-5 in their first doubles game together this season.
 
Melanie Barnes and Ivana Zacevic paired up in the No. 2 match and, as well as April Downing and Makenzie Mitchell in the No. 3 game, won their match 8-1.
 
In singles play, the top three seeded TexAnns won their matches with a 6-2, 6-1 score. Martinez took down Kingsville's one-seeded player while Barnes and Zecevic handled the No. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively.
 
Silvia Nieva won the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-1 while Rull (No. 5) and Mitchell (No. 6) won their respective matches 6-0, 6-1.
 
Tarleton will be in action Tuesday afternoon with a home match against Cameron at 1:30 p.m.
