STEPHENVILLE – The No. 17 ranked Tarleton TexAnns bounced back from a Wednesday loss with a two-day turnaround win over Incarnate Word Friday afternoon.
“This was a good team win for us,” said Tarleton head coach
Lance Drake. “Incarnate Word always has a quality team. We competed hard and the girls really showed strong character today. I'm proud of them.”
Tarleton started the afternoon on top after going up 2-1 in doubles, earning wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.
Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez paired up in the No. 1 match to take down UIW's Ivana Katavic and Andi Botha 8-3. The TexAnn tandem has now won five of their last six matches when playing together.
Makenzie Mitchell and
Marina Rull handled the No. 3 match 8-5 over Jennifer Betancourt and Taryn Strahl. With the win, Mitchell and Rull improved to 3-1 as doubles partners.
The lone doubles loss came in the second match when
Melanie Barnes and
Ivana Zecevic fell 4-8, dropping their fourth straight doubles match and fifth of their last six.
In singles action, Perez and Martinez handled their business in the No. 1 and 2 matches with little trouble – winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
After Zecevic suffered a tough 6-7, 6-7 loss in the No. 3 match, Barnes battled back in the No. 4 match to give Tarleton another win. Barnes lost the first set 4-6, but battled to win the next two 6-1, 6-1.
Rull (6-3, 6-3) and
Silvia Nieva (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) rounded out the day with wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively.
Tarleton will take a brief break from LSC action when they visit to St. Edward's for a 1 p.m. match.
