STEPHENVILLE – After wind postponed yesterday's tennis match, No. 30 Tarleton won its second straight Lone Star Conference tennis match Wednesday afternoon by defeating No. 12 Cameron.
“It was a beautiful day for tennis,” said head coach
Lance Drake. “We got a good team win against a strong Cameron team. We had an opportunity to sweep doubles today, but we committed too many unforced penalties. We didn't play great, but it was good enough to go up 2-1.”
Alicia Perez returned from injury to pair with Karla Martinez in the No. 1 doubles match, which they won 8-4.
Melanie Barnes and
Ivana Zecevic handled the No. 2 match 8-5 to give the TexAnns a 2-0 lead in doubles.
Makenzie Mitchell and
April Downing battled in the No. 3 spot, but faltered 7-9.
With Tarleton leading 2-1,
Ivana Zecevic put the TexAnns up 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 4 match. After Perez lost 6-7, 2-6 in the No. 1 match, Barnes (6-2, 6-4) and Martinez (6-1, 5-7, 7-5) secured the team victory with wins in the No. 3 and No. 2 matches, respectively.
Silvia Nieva and
Marina Rull battled in the No. 5 and No. 6 games, but were defeated in tiebreakers 3-6, 7-6, 7-10 and 6-7, 6-4, 5-10.
Tarleton will head west this weekend for a tournament at Texas-El Paso beginning Friday.
