WICHITA FALLS – Despite opening the day winning two of three in doubles play, No. 17 Tarleton was upset on the road against No. 27 Midwestern State 5-4 in the regular season finale Saturday.
“It was a good close tennis match,” said Tarleton head coach
Lance Drake. “Both sides played well, the bottom of their lineup turned the tide and hopefully we'll see them again at the LSC Championship Tournament.”
The TexAnns started strong winning the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches.
Tarleton's
Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez handled the top-seeded match 8-6 while Mackenzie Mitchell and
Marina Rull took care of business in the No. 3 match 8-4.
Melanie Barnes and
Ivana Zecevic dropped the No. 2 game 8-2, giving Tarleton a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Only the top two TexAnns earned wins in singles while the No. 3-6 matches went to Midwestern State.
Perez won a hard fought battle in the top spot 7-5, 6-3 while Martinez pushed her singles winning streak to 15 straight matches following a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot.
Barnes (3-6, 6-2, 4-6) and Rull (7-5, 2-6, 3-6) battled hard for the tipping point, but each fell in the third set of the No. 3 and 5 matches, respectively, while Zecevic (3-6, 3-6) and
