Chuck Guy scored 24 points and
Tashawn Mabry added 13 points off the bench to guide the No. 9-ranked Texans to an 80-54 win over Angelo State in Lone Star Conference play Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
The Texans (12-0, 1-0 LSC) trailed by as many as 13 points midway through the first period before going on a 21-10 run to close out the half. Tarleton then cruised to its 12th straight win to start the season, outscoring the Rams (10-3, 0-1 LSC) 42-18 in the second half en route to the 26-point win.
The Texans opened the game making just one of its first nine shots from the field, but then followed it up with an 11-for-19 effort to finish the first half shooting 42.9 percent from the floor. ASU started the game just 3-for-11 from the field, but then used a 6-for-9 effort to push its lead to 13 points.
The Rams would then make just two of its last 11 shots of the first half and continued its cold shooting in the second half with a 7-for-27 effort.
The Rams opened the game with a 12-3 run and later took a 17-5 lead on a pair of free throws from Chantz Chambers at the 11:57 mark.
Jakob Damstra would stop the run with a quick lay-up to pull the Texans back within 10 points before both teams traded baskets over the next five minutes of play.
Guy sank a pair of free throws with 6:41 left to play in the first have and it sparked a 13-2 run that ended with another pair of free throws from Guy at the 4:15 mark. Guy's fourth converted free throw pulled the Texans within two points, down 30-28, but Tarleton would later take back its first lead since the first minute of the game with a lay-up from Guy with 1:33 on the clock.
Guy's basket put the Texans up 36-34 and ASU came right back to tie it with two free throws from Bryan Hammond.
Damion Clemons pulled down his second offensive board of the first half with nine seconds left and he tipped in the go ahead bucket for the Texans heading into halftime up 38-36.
ASU's Tommy Woolridge, who had received a technical foul earlier in the contest, was given his second technical foul of the game as both teams were heading to the locker room. His second technical of the contest was cause for his ejection and Tarleton would begin the second half shooting free throws.
Guy poured in both free throws and it was all Tarleton for the next 20 minutes, going on runs of 11-2, 13-6 and 16-2, while holding the Rams to just 25.9 percent from the field in the second half.
The Texans have now won 17 straight games inside Wisdom Gym dating back to last season and improved to 13-7 in conference openers.
Guy, who came into the game having made 30 consecutive free throws, made 10 straight from the charity stripe to extend his streak to 40 straight before missing a free throw attempt following a technical foul. He would finish the contest going 12-for-13 from the line and 6-for-11 from the field en route to his game-leading 24 points.
Guy tied a season-high with seven rebounds and dished out seven assists in the victory, while
Jon Cathey-Macklin pulled down seven boards as well.
Damion Clemons registered a career-high four blocks for the Texans, while the defense forced 18 turnovers that led to 16 points.
Tarleton committed just eight turnovers and ASU managed to score just five points off those miscues.
Kenny Williams paced the ASU offense with his double-double as he finished the game with 25 points and 10 boards – both game-highs.
The Texans outscored the Rams off the bench 40-11 and proved to be dominant inside the paint as well, outscoring the visiting team 38-14 down low.
The Texans have won six out of its last seven contests against ASU and pushed its winning streak to 10 straight over the Rams in Stephenville.
Tarleton will return to action this Saturday, Jan. 11, with its first official road game of the season against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tip-off between the Texans and Javelinas is set for 3 p.m. at Hampton Inn Court in Kingsville.
