TexAnns push winning streak to four with 86-60 rout of Arlington Baptist

STEPHENVILLE – The good times continued to roll for the Tarleton TexAnns (5-1), who made their return to Wisdom Gym with an 86-60 victory over the No. 1-ranked team in NCCAA Division II - Arlington Baptist (3-2).

Tarleton ran its winning streak to four in a row with double-figure scoring performances from Breanna Fuller, Meagan O'Dell, Karli Moore, Kathy Thomas and Ikpeaku Iwobi. The win also extends Tarleton's winning streak in the month of December, marking the 16th consecutive win in the month of December for the TexAnns.

Iwobi got the scoring started with a layup off a dish from Raven McGrath and Thomas followed up with a pair of free throws to open the game with four straight. After Arlington Baptist scored the next six to take its only lead of the game, a McGrath tip-in turned the tide for the TexAnns.

The McGrath bucket started a 10-0 Tarleton run to put the TexAnns up by eight with 13:45 left in the opening half.

The Patriots continued to claw back, pulling within four on three different occasions, but five straight points from Meagan O'Dell on back-to-back possessions quickly pushed the TexAnn lead back to nine at 23-14 and started a 12-7 TexAnn push to extend the lead to 13 with seven minutes left.

Arlington Baptist fought back with a 17-9 run over the remainder of the opening half to send Tarleton into the break with a 39-34 lead.

Out of the break, Iwobi got the scoring started once again but the Patriots struck right back to pull within two points over the first 1:50 of the new half before Karli Moore layup ended the run.

The senior connected on a layup from Morgan Ashmore for the first of eight unanswered points to push the lead back to double figures at 49-39. Arlington Baptist brought it down to six with 11 minutes to go before a Thomas 3-ball turned the tide in Tarleton's favor for the final time.

The senior's 3-pointer started a 28-9 Tarleton run over the next 10:55 with only a last-second jumper for the Patriots pulling Arlington Baptist within 26 at the final horn.

Iwobi led the way for Tarleton with 19 points, which tied a career and season high, on 9-18 shooting from the floor to go along with her one free throw in one trip. Thomas (11) and Moore (10) cracked double figures in the starting lineup while O'Dell (12) and Fuller (11) led the way off the bench.

McGrath scored nine while Brooklyn Garcia (5), Bailey Wipff (3), Travanti Downes (2), Averie Mack (2) and DeAndra Wheeler (2) - who made her Tarleton debut along with Tiara Tatum and Nyariak Duop - rounded out the scoring.

The TexAnns won the rebounding battle 60-34 with Thomas and Fuller grabbing eight boards each and Moore and Iwobi grabbing six each. Of the 15 TexAnns who played in the game, 14 of them grabbed at least one rebound on the night and 13 of them grabbed at least one offensive board.

To cap off the night, Tarleton tallied 27 assists with Thomas and Morgan Ashmore leading the way with six each. Karli Moore reached a new career high with four dimes while also setting a career best on the defensive end with three blocked shots.

The TexAnns will return to action December 15 when they head to Winter Park, Florida to take part in the Rollins Invitational. The first opponent will be Indianapolis on Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. CST.
