LAST TIME OUT
In the final home game of the season, the Tarleton State senior trio of
Shanae Lowrance,
Brianna Bledsoe and
Kiara Wright said farewell to Wisdom Gym with a bang by leading the TexAnns past No. 3 West Texas A&M 71-69. Wright and Bledsoe were the only two TexAnns in double figures while Lowrance was responsible for the game-winning layup and a key defensive play to force a WT turnover with 10 seconds left.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will be meeting No. 40 all-time between the TexAnns and Zias and Tarleton holds the all-time record 27-12 entering the game. The series began with a neutral site game on Dec. 5, 1980 that Tarleton won 78-56. After one more game in 1982, the teams didn't meet again until they became LSC rivals in the NCAA in 1994-95. The Zias jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the series but a 49-43 win in Portales on Jan. 25, 2001 turned the tide for Tarleton. That win started a run for Tarleton that continues to today. The TexAnns have won 23 of the last 25 meetings, including 14 straight, while Eastern New Mexico hasn't won consecutive games in the series since Jan. 2000.
MOMENTUM FROM THE WT WIN
Tarleton has now beaten WT eight time in their NCAA history. In the previous seven wins, Tarleton is 7-0 in the games to follow - including one on the road against Eastern New Mexico on February 16, 2002. Of those seven post-WT wins, Tarleton's victories are by a margin of 17.1 points, five of the seven were by double figuers and four of the seven have been by 20 points or more. The largest margin of victory in a post-WT win was 28 over Texas Woman's on Jan. 21, 2002 and the smallest margin of victory was by three over Arkansas-Monticello Dec. 18, 2004.
LOOKING TO REGAIN ROAD FORM
Since downing Midwestern State on the road on Jan. 15, Tarleton has not won a game away from Wisdom Gym. They have lost four straight away from the walls of Wisdom and will not play at home again this season.
SCOUTING THE ZIAS
Since winning three straight games in mid-January to start Lone Star Conference play with a 3-2 record, Eastern New Mexico has been on a downward spiral with eight straight conference losses - seven of them coming by double figures. The only singe-digit loss by the Zias over the last eight games was a two-point loss at home against Midwestern State (69-71). The Zias are led in scoring by Tori Tucker and Jasmine Johnson with 10.2 points per game while Jordan Cooper and Nelsha Peterson are averaging 9.4 and 9.0 points per contest.
UP NEXT FOR THE TEXANNS
The regular season will come to a close a week from Saturday when the TexAnns visit Texas A&M-Commerce March 1 at 5 p.m.
