ARKADELPHIA, AR – On the first day of the Henderson State/Ouachita Baptist Tournament, Tarleton State tennis did not falter in a single set as they swept Delta State 5-0 and Henderson State 9-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season and 4-0 against Division II foes.
In the tournament opener, Tarleton State opened with a doubles sweep of the Statesmen and finished off Delta with singles victories by
Alicia Perez and
Melanie Barnes to secure the win.
"We stopped the match after five sets because Delta State had another match, but I thought we handled the pressure situations well in this match," said head coach
Lance Drake. "I was pleased with our sweep of doubles and I liked how we kept the focus into singles action."
Barnes and
Silvia Nieva were the first doubles team to finish with a quick 8-1 victory in the No. 3 match while Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell won a 9-8 decision in the No. 2 match.
Ivana Zecevic and
Luiza Adas finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win in the top-seeded match.
Barnes got the first singles win after her opponent retired with an injury after Barnes took a 5-2 advantage. Perez completed the sweep in the No. 1 match with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Tarleton was winning in all four of the other singles matches at the time of finish.
In the second match, Tarleton and Henderson State went the distance as the TexAnns took a 9-0 win.
"We hadn't played consecutive matches this season and I was worried about how our focus would be," said Drake. "I thought we handled it well and started off quick. Henderson put up a good fight but our ladies did a good job of preventing any comebacks."
The TexAnns wasted little time in take a sweep of the doubles with
Ellie Stevens and
April Downing teaming up to take the No. 3 match 8-0 while Zecevic and Adas also had a flawless 8-0 win in the No. 1. Perez and Mitchell won their No. 2 match 8-1.
In singles play, Perez was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 1 match while Stevens posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 6 match.
Mitchell got her first singles action of the season and posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory while
Marina Rull (6-2, 6-1), Adas (7-5, 6-1) and Nieva (7-5, 6-2) claimed victories in the No. 2, 3 and 4 matches, respectively.
Tarleton will wrap up its time in Arkadelphia tomorrow with back-to-back matchups against Southwest Baptist at 8 a.m. and Ouachita Baptist at noon.
