Box Score PORTALES, NM – Led by double-digit scoring efforts from six players, Tarleton ended their recent road woes in a big way Saturday night by dominating the Eastern New Mexcio Zias en route to a 89-64 victory in Greyhound Arena.
All five starters and
Raven McGrath posted double-figure scoring efforts – which is the most double-figure scorers in a game this season and the first time all season that all five starters have topped the mark in the same game.
This road victory ends Tarleton's string of four consecutive road losses and is their first win away from Wisdom Gym since defeating Midwestern State on Jan. 15. This is also the third consecutive win overall for Tarleton.
After going 1:13 into the game before either team put points on the board, the teams started the game with a 5-5 tie but back-to-back buckets by
Karli Moore got the TexAnn onslaught started.
The Moore buckets began a 17-4 Tarleton run down to the 10:59 mark, capped off by a free throw by
Shanae Lowrance, to give the TexAnns a commanding 22-9 lead.
Eastern New Mexico responded over the next three minutes to sut the Tarleton lead down to five at 24-19 but Tarleton's McGrath ended the Zia run with a 3-point off an assist from
Travanti Downes to put Tarleton up 27-19 and start a quick 7-0 push to extend the lead back to double figures.
The Zias cut it down to 10 with 3:13 left in the opening half but, once again, Moore started a big run for Tarleton when her layup kick-started a 12-1 Tarleton run over the rest of the half to send the TexAnns into halftime with a 49-28 lead.
In the second half, Tarleton cruised to a victory – pushing its lead to as many as 33 with 4:30 left and never leading by less than 20 throughout the entire second half.
Tarleton shot 59 percent from the floor, which is the highest shooting percentage away from Wisdom Gym this season. The previous high for the road this season was 52 percent at Kingsville. The TexAnns were also 55 percent from downtown and 75 at the free throw line.
In two games against Eastern New Mexico this season, Tarleton is 63-104 from the floor for a .606 shooting percentage from the floor.
Tarleton dominated the paint, winning the rebounding battle 35-26 and the points in the paint 34-20. The TexAnns also won off the bench as the TexAnn reserves outscored Eastern New Mexico's 28-14.
Shanae Lowrance led the TexAnns with 16 points while Wright scored 14 and grabbed 12 rebounds in 25 minutes of game time for her 55
th career double-double.
Brianna Bledsoe scored 11 while Kathy Thomas and
Meagan O'Dell added 10 each to round out the starting five.
McGrath scored 12 points off the bench, which was just two points shy of the entire group of ENMU reserves who scored a combined 14 points off the Zia bench. Moore just missed double figures with eight while
Courtney Randle (2),
Keyra Johnson (2),
Travanti Downes (2),
Haley Trentham (1) and
Ikpeaku Iwobi (1) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.
Tarleton has Wednesday off and will wrap up the 2014 regular season on the road next Saturday when they visit Texas A&M-Commerce at 5 p.m. in the Field House.
