Tarleton earns eight medals on final day of LSC Championships en route to fourth-place team finishes

Coughlin, Men's 4x400m Relay Team highlights day two by being crowned LSC Champions

Shelby Terry earned an NCAA provisional mark in the Pentathlon at the LSC Championships this weekend.
LUBBOCK – On the final day of the Lone Star Conference Championships, Tarleton State had eight athletes earn medals en route to claiming fourth-place finishes by the Texans and TexAnns.
 
In addition to the medals, Tarleton had seven athletes notch NCAA provisional qualifying marks over the weekend, including five individuals, the men's Distance Medley and men's 1,600m Relay Teams.
 
Distance and Relays
 
For the second straight day, it was the Tarleton distance runners and relay teams who dominated the day with six of the team's eight total medals coming in these events and three of the NCAA provisional marks.
 
Aly Coughlin and the men's 1,600m Relay Team highlighted the day by bringing home gold medals.
 
Coughlin competed in the 3000m run and finished as the LSC's fastest runner with a time of 10:05.61 – making a new personal best and a better NCAA provisional mark. This was Coughlin's second gold medal of the weekend after earning one in the 5000m run yesterday.
 
The other gold medal came via the men's 4x400m Relay Team, compiled of Clarencio Guerrero, Michael Eschbach, Cameron Krc and Gilson Umunnakwe, with an NCAA provisional mark time of 3:14.46.
 
Rounding out the Tarleton medal count, beginning with a pair of silvers, were Chase Rathke in the men's Mile Run with a time of 4:23.29 and Tye Doty in the 3000m Run 8:46.21 while Rathke also earned a bronze in the 800m finals with a time of 1:55.09 and Dylan Willett claimed a third-place finish in the Mile with a time of 4:24.85.
 
In addition to the Texan and TexAnn medalists, Tarleton also earned five more top-10 finishes including three seventh-place finishes by Lindsey Hinton (5:17.37) in the Mile, Brian Cooper (1:57.88) in the 800m finals and the Women's 4x400m relay team of Amanda Smith, La'Daria Nelson, Jasmine Owens and Kara Bickham in a time of 4:03.95.
 
Also earning top-10's were Katelin Huckabee with an eighth-place time of 10:32.48 and Willett in a 10th-place time of 8:58.66 in their respective 3000m Runs.
 
Sprints and Hurdles
 
Tarleton had six athletes compete in their respective finals of the 55m Hurdles and the 400m run with Cameron Krc earning a medal in the 400m run and hitting an NCAA provisional mark.
 
The sophomore sprinter completed the 400m finals in a time of 48.84 for a third-place finish. Gilson Umunnakwe also competed in the 400m finals and finished sixth in a time of 49.20.
 
Tarleton also had a pair of Texans and a pair of TexAnns running in the finals of the 55m Hurdles with Kyle Johnson and Nikki McNorton earning fourth-place finishes in their respective races with times of 8.08 and 8.30. Randall Kadlacek (10.46) and Shelby Terry (8.47) finished their finals race in eighth and seventh, respectively.
 
Jumps and Throws
 
Tarleton had 10 athletes compete in the field events on the final day of the LSC Championships and McNorton, a two-time outdoor All-American, claimed the silver medal in the high jump to lead the way.
 
McNorton leaped 1.67m (5-7.75) for a second-place finish en route to being the eighth Tarleton athlete to bring home a medal from day two. Also competing in the high jump for Tarleton and claiming eighth and ninth place finishes, respectively, were Katy Sikes and Shelby Terry with leaps of 1.52m (4-11.75), which was decided by a tiebreaker.
 
Kenny Odunaiya, who notched his first career NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw yesterday, finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 15.57m (51-1) while Marissa Westrbook claimed fifth in the women's shot put with a throw of 12.54m (41-1.75).
 
Also earning top-10 finishes were Taylor Parkhill and Pam Murfin at sixth and seventh in the pole vault with leaps of 2.95m (9-8), decided by tiebreakers, while Zach Pratt (13.36m; 43-10), Nic Perez (13.12m; 43-0.5) and Brianna Johnson (11.20m; 36-9) all earned top-15 finishes in the shot put in places of 12th, 13th and 12th, respectively.
 
Pentathlon and Heptathlon
 
Peyton Best finished the men's heptathlon in Sunday's finale while Shelby Terry's finish in yesterday's pentathlon was enough to earn her an NCAA provisional mark.
 
Best, who finished yesterday's events in fourth place, maintained his fourth-place finish with a total of 4623 points which was 12 points shy of medaling.
 
He finished fifth in the 55m Hurdles with a time of 8.48, sixth in the pole vault with a launch of 3.30m (10-10) and had his best finish of all the heptathlon events by winning the 1000m run with a time of 2:42.97.
 
Tarleton will begin its outdoor track and field schedule next week when they host the Tarleton Invitational on Thursday. As for the remaining indoor slate, the National Championships are scheduled for March 14-15.
