STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State Track and Field will send 13 athletes to the historic 98th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by Texas at the Mike A. Myers Stadium starting on Thursday running until Saturday.
The Texans will open the three-day event with three athletes competing on Thursday.
Tayler Wessely will be the first to compete in the women's hammer throw on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Wessely currently ranks 11th in the NCAA West with a best toss of 61.45 meters in the season opener at ACU.
Jacob Thomas will debut at the Texas Relays in the pole vault at 5:30 pm. Thomas broke the school record with a 5.06-meter leap and ranks 25th in the NCAA West this season. The pair is followed by
Kaitlyn Gale in the 3000 Steeplechase at 8:45 pm, who ranks 18th in the NCAA West this season clocking in at 10:53.32 also in the season opener.
On Friday, the Texans will have eight athletes competing. Four athletes will be competing in the morning in the sprints events with
Malak Rashwan and
Ca'terrin Cox starting off the day at 9:35 am in the 100 and 110-meter hurdles. Sprinters
Victoria Cameron and
JayBrion Jones will each open their outdoor slate in the 100-meter dash later in the morning session. Cameron is the only Texan slated to compete this season that also competed at last year's Texas Relays. The afternoon session will be kicked off by outdoor long jump debuts of
Jalen Cadet and
Johnathon Rodgers in the men's long jump at 12:30 p.m. Then at 1 p.m.,
Colton Andress and
Davi Torres will compete in the men's high jump. Torres is currently ranked 25th in the NCAA West with a best clearance of 2.05 meters.
Saturday will be the finals for the sprints and hurdles events, scheduled to start at 2:45 p.m. The men's and women's triple jump will commence at 3 p.m. with the Texans final two athletes,
Sir Jonathan Sims and
Sofia DeGroot are set to open their outdoor jumping season and round out the Purple and White's performance at the Texas Relays.
Cox and Rodgers each picked up the Texan men's first WAC Weekly Awards of the outdoor slate. Cox was named the WAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week after setting the school record in the 110 hurdles in 13.74 seconds. Cox now holds the top time in the WAC, the 5th best time in the NCAA West Region and 11th in all of the NCAA. Rodgers was named the WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week after a runner-up performance in the men's triple jump. His best leap of 15.23 meters is the second best in the WAC and 15th in the NCAA West Region.
Last year, the Texans brought home four Texas Relays medals.
Prestina Ochonogor notched silver in her Texan outdoor debut setting a new program record of 6.48 meters at the time.
Angel Gomez also earned silver and broke the school record in the 10,000 meters.
Gabriele Tosti earned bronze in the men's triple jump with the second-best jump in program history and
Victoria Cameron set the program's new all-conditions record and took home bronze in the women's 100 meters clocking in at 11.09 seconds.
Tarleton State Track and Field will have its full team back in action next week on Friday at the Baylor Invitational on April 10 at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.
