GLASGOW, Scotland — Tarleton State Track and Field men's long jumper, Lokesh Sathyanathan placed fifth while representing his home country of India in the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Wednesday at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.
 
Sathyanathan made his Commonwealth Games debut for Team India, placing fifth in Wednesday's finals of the men's long jump. His best leap of 7.97 meters was just a tenth of a meter from tying for third place and earning a medal. The Karantaka, India, native, was one of two long jumpers to represent India. India was the only country to place two athletes in the top five of the Commonwealth Games and one of two countries to boast a pair of athletes in the final.
 
"Lokesh continues to prove that he belongs among the best long jumpers in the world," said head coach Bobby Carter, who is in Scotland coaching Sathyanathan. "Reaching the Commonwealth Games final and finishing fifth against an elite international field is a tremendous accomplishment, even if today's result wasn't the performance we know he's capable of. Champions don't define themselves by one competition, they're defined by their consistency, resilience, and ability to compete on the biggest stages, and Lokesh has done exactly that all season."  

Sathyanathan posted his best leap on his first attempt. After the first round of jumps, he ranked third overall. His second-best jump of 7.70 meters came on his second attempt. He recorded a mark on each of his six attempts. He had maintained in fourth place until the fifth round where Australian jumper Christopher Mitrevski leapt his best mark of the competition by over a tenth of a meter with a jump of 8.02 meters.
 
The Texan jumper placed seventh in the preliminary round on Monday with a best leap of 7.77 meters. He qualified fourth in his group and seventh amongst the field of 24 total athletes. But his best finals leap of 7.97 meters would have been the third best leap in the prelims and placed him fifth overall in the finals.
 
I'm incredibly proud of the way he represented India, our program, and everyone who has supported his journey," continued Carter. "This experience isn't the finish line, it's another step toward something even greater. I have complete confidence that his best performances are still ahead of him, and I fully expect him to continue competing for medals on the world's biggest stages. Greater is Coming!"
 
Jamaica's Tajay Gale took home the gold medal with a best leap of 8.15 meters. Fellow countryman, Murali Sreeshankar, brought home silver for India jumping 8.09 meter. Scotland's own Stephen Mackenzie rounded out the podium with a best mark of 8.08 meters.
 
Sathyanathan is not the only current Texan to be participating in the Commonwealth Games. Women's long jumper, Prestina Ochonogor, will be competing starting on Friday for Team Nigeria.
