SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton State made a visit to San Antonio and upset the nation's No. 21-ranked and region's No. 2 ranked St. Mary's Rattlers with a 6-3 victory Friday afternoon.
"It was a good team win for us," said Tarleton head coach
Lance Drake. "Luiza (Adas) played well and did a good job of closing out her match. Our seniors showed great leadership and I'm proud of the way everyone competed."
Tarleton got the scoring started with the first two wins of the day when
Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell, the region's eighth-ranked doubles tandem, handed St. Mary's an 8-1 loss and
Melanie Barnes and
Silvia Nieva paired up for an 8-4 win in the No. 3 doubles set to put Tarleton up 2-0 early.
Ivana Zecevic and Adas, the region's No. 3-ranked doubles tandem, couldn't cap off a win as the Rattlers took the No. 1 match 8-4.
In singles play, Perez won the battle of the region's No. 3 (Perez) against the region's No. 7 (Cristina Lopez) with a 6-1, 6-1 rout in the No. 1 match before St. Mary's made a small push by taking the No. 2 and 3 matches to bring the match to a 3-3 tie.
Nieva put Tarleton back on top with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 6 spot before Adas secured the team victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 4 match.
Marina Rull polished off the afternoon by winning her No. 5 set 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
Tarleton will return to action Tuesday when they head to Lawton, Oklahoma for a Lone Star Conference match against the No. 4 team in the South Central Region, Cameron at 1:30 p.m.
