SOUTHLAKE – Tarleton State tennis has advanced to the Lone Star Conference Tennis Championship game after knocking off Cameron 5-2 in the semifinal round at the Southlake Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
Tarleton and Cameron's meeting came with more on the line than just a berth in the LSC Championship game against Midwestern State – it also came with NCAA Regional aspirations attached.
After falling to Cameron in the regular season, the Aggies entered this weekend's LSC Championship as the No. 3 seed in the South Central regional rankings while the TexAnns checked in at No. 5 seed. The top four seeds advance to the NCAA tournament.
The TexAnns made their presence known Friday afternoon by exacting revenge against the Aggies in the 5-2 semifinal victory.
Friday's semifinal match started with Tarleton jumping out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
The No. 1 pairing of
Ivana Zecevic and
Luiza Adas won their match 8-5 while the No. 3 tandem of
Silvia Nieva and
Melanie Barnes handled their match 8-4.
Alicia Perez and
Makenzie Mitchell dropped the No. 2 match 6-8.
In singles, Perez handled the No. 1 match to the tune of a 6-3, 6-1 win while the final two Tarleton victories came from
Marina Rull (6-3, 6-4) and Nieva (6-4, 7-6) in the No. 5 and 6 matches.
Luiza Adas suffered the only singles loss 0-6, 2-6 in the No. 4 match.
Tarleton will square off against the region's No. 1 seed Midwestern State at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
