- Complete ResultsLUBBOCK – The Tarleton State track & field teams competed at "the bubble" in their final regular season meet of the indoor season Friday in the Red Raider Open.
Tarleton's men and women's teams would combine to break 16 school records, including eight provisional marks and one automatic bid to the national championships next month in Alabama.
"We got a lot accomplished today," said head coach
Pat Ponder. "Anytime you break 16 school records in one meet it's a testament to the work the athletes and coaches are putting in at practice day in and day out. Breaking records in both the field events and on the track shows that we're a very balanced team."
Distance and Relays
In the men's 800m it was All-American
Chase Rathke winning the event in a new school record time of 1:50.77. Rathke's time broke his own school record in the event of 1:53.17 that was set in a third-place finish at last years NCAA championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Rathke is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation.
Robert Pereria ran a personal best 4:31.74 in the mile finishing eighth amongst a field of 23 runners, while the tandem of
Tye Doty (8:36.85) and
Luke Scribner (8:57.30) would place third and eighth in the 3000m, respectively.
The last running event of the day would see both the men's and women's 4x400m relays post school record times to record the second and fourth best performances, respectively, in the Lone Star Conference this year.
The women's 4x400m relay of
LaDaria Nelson,
Shelby Greenwalt,
Leslie Zupanic and
Jasmine Owens would take the baton the distance in 3:52.40 to obliterate the school record by 12.42 seconds and finish second overall. The TexAnn 4x400m relay is currently ranked No. 45 in the nation.
The men's 4x400m relay - using their fourth different combination of the year – composed of
Terrance Gross,
Gilson Umunnakwe,
Cameron Krc and
Marquis Thompson blazed the track to finish second behind South Plains (3:13.25) and reset the school record at 3:14.91 erasing last week school record performance of 3:16.88. Tarleton's "B" relay of Ryan Huntly,
Everett James,
Chase Rathke and
Randall Kadlacek finished fifth in 3:20.67. The Texan 4x400m relay is currently ranked No. 17 in the nation.
Sprints and Hurdles
In the women's 55m
Hollie Boyd led the way for the TexAnns in a school record seventh-place finish besting her own school record by .05, stopping the clock in 7.27 seconds during prelims and 7.31 seconds in the finals.
Junior hurdler
Randall Kadlacek broke his own school record during the prelims of the 55m hurdles running 7.70 seconds on his way to a 7.73 second eighth-place finish in the finals.
The 200m would see
Cameron Krc and
Ariel Ballard set the pace for their respective teams, each breaking the school record. Ballard would run a personal best of 25.82 to finish 12
th while Krc ran an indoor personal best of 22.58 to finish 17
th.
LaDaria Nelson and
Gilson Umunnakwe would equal the feat by Ballard and Krc in the 400m as they both turned in school record performances. Nelson ran 58.01 in her career debut as a TexAnn finishing ninth. Umunnakwe, a member of last years All-American outdoor 4x400m relay, set a personal best indoors of 49.35 finishing 12
th.
Jumps and Throws
In the field events it was
Euphemia Edem locking up a spot in the 2015 NCAA indoor championships on her fifth jump of the competition leaping a school record 6.03m (19'-9.5") to win the event by .38m (1'-3") and automatically qualify for the national meet next month. Edem would return in the triple jump to post another school record, this time jumping 12.19m (40'-0") finishing second. Edem's jump of 19'-9.5" demolished the old school record of 5.20m (17'-0.75") set by
Shelby Terry last season by over 2'-5" and is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation. Edem is also ranked No. 2 in the nation in the triple jump.
Danyelle Dillard and Kenny Odunayia each broke their own school records in the shot put in provisional qualifying performances. Dillard would add over 2' 5" to her school record finishing the day with a best throw of 14.09m (46'-11.75") to finish fourth, while Odunayia finished fourth with a toss of 16.21m (53'-2.25"). Dillard and Odunayia are ranked No. 19 and No. 29 in the nation, respectively.
Nic Perez (15.39m/50'-6") and
Zach Pratt (14.45m/47'-5") also finished inside the top-eight for the Texans in the shot put.
Odunayia would once again hit a provisional mark during the meet, this time in the weight throw. With a best throw of 17.64m (57'-10.5") Odunayia added his name to the national list as a provisional qualifier currently ranked No. 32 in the men's weight throw.
Zach Pratt finished sixth with a best toss of 12.95m (42'-6").
The pole vault would see both the men's and women's records fall as
Sarah Vann and
William Carlton rewrote the book clearing 3.52m (11'-6.5") and 4.67m (15'-3.75"), respectively. Vann finished eighth and Carlton claimed a fourth-place provisional qualifying finish that is currently ranked No. 43 in the nation.
Rounding out the meet were
Roxana Hernandez,
Morgan McKee, and
Mikala Booher in the women's high jump. Hernandez cleared a team high 1.56m (5'-1.25") to finish tied for fourth. Both McKee and Booher tied for seventh clearing 1.56m (5-1.25") needing more attempts to clear the height than Hernandez.
"I knew it was a good day just by watching the races, this was a good meet that gave us a lot of momentum going into the Lone Star Conference meet," said Ponder. "The championships are going to be very competitive and I can't wait to see our men's and women's teams compete."
Tarleton will make a third trip to Lubbock this season February 28-March 1as they compete in the Lone Star Conference indoor track and field championships.
